Tamashima is an area that spreads across the western part of Kurashiki City.
Until its merger with Kurashiki City and Kojima City in 1967, it was Tamashima City.
During the Edo period, it flourished as a port of call for the Kitamae-bune ships, and traces of its past as a commercial city known as "Naniwa of the West" remain in the townscape preservation area. The shopping district retains the scenery of the Showa era and has also served as a filming location for movies. There are many places where one can feel history, such as Entsu-ji Temple, where the Zen monk Ryokan practiced, and Haguro Shrine, which has watched over the port town.
