Kurashiki Afternoon Tea (Summer 2026) - A petite luxurious event to enjoy Okayama-produced fruits in "Kurashiki's Food Culture."

In summer, delicious fruits such as white peaches, Shine Muscat grapes, and Pione grapes come into season, while in winter, strawberries and more follow suit.

The Kurashiki Afternoon Tea is an event that started in 2015, where you can enjoy seasonal fruits. It is held regularly in summer and winter, and it has gained popularity for allowing guests to indulge in the luxurious sweets offered by each participating store.

The Kurashiki Afternoon Tea Executive Committee, composed mainly of participating stores, aims to make this event a staple, saying, "We want it to be an event that represents Kurashiki Afternoon Tea."

We spoke with the committee chair, Miki Morita, and Yoshiharu Inoue, the manager of Candle Taku Watanabe Residence, about their past efforts and thoughts.

Enjoying Okayama-grown Fruits at Kurashiki Afternoon Tea

We will introduce the features of the "Kurashiki Afternoon Tea," which offers an afternoon tea experience unique to the Fruit Kingdom, and the participating stores for Summer 2026.

About Kurashiki Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is a tea-drinking custom that originated in England around the 19th century, characterized by enjoying light meals and sweets along with tea in an elegant tea party.

It seems to have been a moment for the nobility to fill their stomachs in preparation for the dinner party held in the evening.

The "Kurashiki Afternoon Tea," arranged in a way that reflects Kurashiki, features a variety of sweets made with fresh fruits from Okayama, allowing guests to leisurely enjoy them at Kurashiki stores.

In summer, Okayama-grown grapes or peaches are included, while in winter, Okayama-grown strawberries are featured, and for Halloween, Okayama-grown fruits are always included.

With the desire for guests to take their time, all stores offer drinks that are either "2 cups included," "free refills," or "served in a pot."

Additionally, the beautiful presentation with two or more tiers, typical of afternoon tea, is a highlight. The creative menus and presentations vary greatly among the stores, allowing guests to enjoy the uniqueness of each store both visually and through taste.

About Kurashiki Afternoon Tea Summer 2026

The 25th Kurashiki Afternoon Tea, held in the summer of 2026, will have a record 34 participating stores.

The new participating stores for Summer 2026 are as follows:

In addition to the regular afternoon tea, a "Petit Afternoon Tea" that was born during the Winter 2023 event will also be offered.

The "Petit Afternoon Tea" was created in response to customer requests for "a smaller portion of afternoon tea" and "to keep the price down." By reducing the portion size and limiting the drink to one cup, it is offered at a lower price.

In Summer 2026, five stores will offer this option.

Additionally, starting in Summer 2026, a new concept called Evening Only Afternoon Tea has been introduced.

This new initiative was created in response to requests for "wanting to enjoy afternoon tea in the evening," and it will be offered after 6 PM. The drink options will include alcoholic beverages, and the dishes will be paired with these drinks.

The Journey of Kurashiki Afternoon Tea

The first Kurashiki Afternoon Tea took place in the summer of 2015 (July 10 - September 30). From the following year, 2016, it has been held twice a year, in summer and winter.

Initially, there were 9 participating stores centered around the Bikan Historical Area, but the area has expanded to cover all of Kurashiki City, and the 25th event (July 1 - September 30, 2026) will feature 34 participating stores.

The Kurashiki Afternoon Tea, which started under government leadership, was initially planned to continue for three years. However, as the end of the third year approached in 2017, it was decided to extend for an additional two years due to its increasing popularity and attention, as it would be a waste to stop at such a time.

Then, in the winter of 2020, the fifth year, government support was discontinued.
Upon learning of the crisis of termination, many fans voiced their desire for it to continue, saying, "We want it to last longer!"

Encouraged by these voices, the participating stores also felt, "It would be a waste to end it like this; let's continue." Thus, the "Kurashiki Afternoon Tea Executive Committee" was newly established to ensure its continuation.

Miki Morita, who was involved as a staff member of the Kurashiki Tourism Convention Bureau at the time of the event's launch in 2015, became the chairperson of the executive committee. Other committee members include the following individuals from the participating stores of Kurashiki Afternoon Tea.

First, to prepare for the launch of the website and the summer 2020 event, from March 16 to April 30, 2020, we challenged ourselves with crowdfunding.

With warm messages such as "I look forward to participating every time" and "I support you!", support steadily gathered. About a month after the crowdfunding started, we reached our target amount.

I was worried if we would receive support...
Such thoughts crossed my mind, but our desire to continue was strong, and we took on the challenge of crowdfunding.
As a result, once we started, we found that there were so many people who wished for its continuation, and even though everyone is anxious in this world, we were instead encouraged...
Ah, how warm-hearted the fans of Kurashiki Afternoon Tea are, I deeply thought.
