Kurashiki is the city center stretching from JR Kurashiki Station to the Bikan Historical Area, along with the surrounding regions.
Once prosperous as a port, it developed as a distribution center for goods after becoming a direct territory of the shogunate during the Edo period. Along the Kurashiki River, the townscape features a harmonious blend of white-walled residences and Western-style buildings.
In the northeastern Shō district, the Tatetsuki Site, dating back about 1800 years, remains. The southeastern Chayamachi is the hometown of Isozaki Ninkai, who invented the flower mat "Kinkanen" during the Meiji period, and there is a memorial museum. In the western Nishi-Achi, there is the Henjō-in Temple, said to have been established during the Heian period.
