Enjoying delicious food makes your heart sing, doesn’t it? Watching that food being prepared is surely one of the pleasures of eating, too.

“Okonomiyaki Kaede (hereafter referred to as “Kaede”)” is a restaurant specializing in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.
The restaurant has an open kitchen where you can watch the cooking up close. The owner, who has honed his skills for about 20 years, carefully grills each pancake one at a time.

We’d like to introduce Kaede, a restaurant recommended not only for fans of flour-based dishes but also for anyone looking to enjoy teppan-grilled food.

The information presented here was current when this article was published in November 2026. Please note that it may differ from the latest information.

About Kaede

Kaede is an okonomiyaki restaurant in Sasaoki, Kurashiki City.
A large, deep burgundy shop curtain marks the entrance. A Japanese maple tree, the same kind as the one in the restaurant’s name, is planted beside the entrance.

Inside, the orange walls and chairs catch your eye. It’s a warm, welcoming space with the natural warmth of wood.

The tatami room has three tables, each with sunken kotatsu seating.

Okonomiyaki is served directly on the teppan at the counter, and on a teppan plate in the tatami room. Whichever seat you choose, you can enjoy it piping hot to the last bite.

Kaede’s Menu

Kaede serves just one carefully crafted type of okonomiyaki.
You can add toppings if you’d like a larger portion or want to change up the flavor.

On the other hand, there’s a wide selection of side dishes, including individual dishes, teppan-grilled items, and salads. Alcohol is also available, making it a great place to visit like an izakaya.

Here are some of the restaurant’s signature okonomiyaki and popular teppan-grilled dishes.

Okonomiyaki

Kaede’s okonomiyaki is Hiroshima-style, made by layering ingredients on top of the batter and grilling them.

Egg, pork, noodles, squid tempura, and plenty of cabbage and bean sprouts are layered on a thin, crepe-like batter. I was amazed by how substantial it was.

The steamed vegetables have a lovely sweetness and an irresistible crisp bite. The noodles are crisp and fragrant on the outside, with a chewy texture inside. The richness of the pork and egg complements the sweet sauce perfectly.

Teppan-Grilled Offal

One of the most popular dishes besides okonomiyaki is the “teppan-grilled offal.”

Bite into the springy meat, and the distinctive fat of the offal bursts across your mouth. The bean sprouts and cabbage, soaked in all that savory flavor, are the perfect supporting cast.

Eating the offal and vegetables in turns keeps the rich fat from feeling too heavy, and you can’t stop yourself from taking the next bite.

Chicken Neck Meat Stir-Fried with Green Onion and Salt

Another popular dish is the “chicken neck meat stir-fried with green onion and salt.”

A generous mound of green onion is piled over the chicken neck meat. When it arrived fresh off the grill, steam billowed up, and I couldn’t help exclaiming, “Wow!”

The punchy green onion and salt sauce is a perfect match for the springy chicken neck meat. Its bold seasoning would make it a great accompaniment to drinks or rice.
