Okonomiyaki TAKU ~Authentic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki made with carefully selected ingredients on a custom-made griddle, with the same great taste for 22 years, in Kurashiki

3 Popular Menu Items

Authentic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki—some people even make the trip to Hiroshima just to eat it.

But it can be hard to make it all the way to Hiroshima.

Not far from the Bikan Historical Area, there’s an okonomiyaki restaurant whose owner trained in Hiroshima and recreates the authentic taste.

As of 2022, the restaurant had been open for 22 years, and its unchanged flavors remain popular.

In addition to okonomiyaki, they also serve curry and B-grade gourmet dishes.

Here’s a look at Okonomiyaki TAKU, packed with the owner’s personal touches.

The information provided was current when this article was published in November 2022. Please note that it may differ from current information.

Okonomiyaki TAKU: a nostalgic, relaxing atmosphere near the Bikan Historical Area

Okonomiyaki TAKU is just a short walk from the Bikan Historical Area.

A large wooden sign makes it easy to spot.

As soon as you step inside, the fragrant aroma of sauce greets you.

The warm, nostalgic interior is decorated with autographs from celebrities who have visited.

The owner had taken thorough measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, using acrylic panels and screens he made himself.

The interior has a nostalgic feel, and from the counter seats you can watch the okonomiyaki being cooked.

Inside TAKU

They take great care with every ingredient: fresh noodles delivered from Hiroshima for the soba, Sanuki udon, and fresh domestically grown cabbage.

There’s a wide selection on the menu, and it’s a treat to be able to enjoy B-grade gourmet dishes that originated in Okayama Prefecture right here in Kurashiki.

The delicious aroma starts wafting over while the food is still cooking. It’s irresistible.

I tried some of the owner’s recommended popular dishes.

Hiroshima Classic (fresh soba noodles) ¥998

Hiroshima Classic

As the sauce hit the hot griddle with a sizzling sound, its aroma wafted through the air.

One bite and you’ll know why this is Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki—it’s irresistible.

The chewy batter, tender domestically grown cabbage, and crispy pork all melded with the sauce. It was truly delicious.

The freshly boiled, chewy noodles delivered from Hiroshima were also a perfect match for the okonomiyaki.

Adding mayonnaise or spicy sauce changes up the flavor, making it delicious again and again.

Premium Hormone Udon (Sanuki udon) ¥1,150

Premium Hormone Udon

A popular dish with both local young people and tourists.

The rich fat from the tender, springy hormone spreads through your mouth, making it irresistibly delicious.

The fat had a subtle sweetness.

The Sanuki udon has just the right amount of chew, making this a dish you’ll want to eat again and again.

The crisp cabbage adds a nice touch, too.

It made me want a beer.

It’s best piping hot and freshly made, so it isn’t available for takeout.

Hearty Yakisoba Curry ¥1,480

Hearty Yakisoba Curry

A new menu item created for people who want both curry and okonomiyaki sauce.

Since you might want a little rice, it comes with a small rice ball topped with cheese.

It’s topped with a fried egg, too, making it a truly hearty dish.

Yakisoba and curry are an unusual combination, but the best of both come together in a filling meal.

TAKU’s original curry is made with more than 10 kinds of spices and plenty of vegetables and fruit. It’s a little spicy and smells wonderful.

The curry’s mild heat makes it a big hit with children, too.

We interviewed TAKU owner Omori Takushi, who develops and prepares the restaurant’s many popular dishes.
