We spoke with Director Rupin about "Ato Ato".
A space enjoyable for both children and parents
What has been the response from users?
Rupin
Mothers seem to be having more fun than the children, and it's clear that adults are excited. That makes me very happy.
Parents often play more seriously than the children, relaxing on the engawa (veranda) while enjoying nature.
Since the garden is open, we also see fathers seriously playing with jump ropes and kendama (a traditional Japanese toy).
What are the points to consider when choosing toys?

We choose toys that allow children to think and play on their own.
We provide toys that can be combined or imagined, allowing children to expand their play through their own imagination.
What kind of play do they engage in?
Rupin
When using a toy called "Mandara," they engage in pretend play or combine it with other toys to build castles.
Experiences and learning possible only at Ato Ato
What skills do you hope the children who use the facility will develop?
Rupin
I hope they develop the ability to create and explore play independently.
Instead of parents leading with "Look, this is amazing," we value interactions that support children's interests, allowing them to develop their own thinking skills.
Moreover, children naturally learn "this is how you can play" by observing their parents having fun.
Have you been surprised by anything while operating Ato Ato?

I am truly amazed by the high learning ability of children.
They recreate experiences from the facility with toys at home, or they carefully observe other children's creations and perfectly replicate them on their next visit.
The ability of children to think, express, and learn through play is surprisingly high and impressive.
Future prospects
Do you have any future prospects?
Rupin
In the future, I would like to make effective use of the mezzanine.
Currently, we are holding "Ato College" on the first floor, but we plan to renovate the mezzanine to provide a more formal learning space.
Additionally, I would like to utilize the rich natural environment to offer nature observation and outdoor activities and courses.

At "Ato Ato," we provide a space where parents and children can spend time together playing.
In a nature-rich old folk house, we invite families to come and enjoy free play with toys. I hope it becomes an opportunity for parent-child communication through play.
