Upon learning that the “jam tun Yakage Honjin-mae Pop-up” would be held in front of the Yakage Honjin on July 8 and 9, 2023, I went there in search of unique and vibrant African fabric products.
What is African Fabric Apparel “jam tun”
“jam tun” is a apparel brand that creates clothing and goods using African fabric.
jam tun means “only peace” in the local language of Senegal, the Pulaar language.
The representative, Tamako Taga, established the brand aiming for fair trade with Senegal.
Ms. Taga was dispatched to Senegal as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer for two years starting in 2014, where she worked on raising awareness about local waste issues.
The beginning of her activities was making pouches by combining discarded plastic bags from drinking water and fabric scraps.
Her activities led to a reduction in waste and an increase in income for local tailors, and after returning to Japan, she utilized crowdfunding to establish jam tun.
jam tun does not have a permanent store.
Pop-up stores and workshops are held in various locations across Japan, and before the Yakage Honjin-mae Pop-up, they had a store on Hachijo Island in Tokyo.
I visited the “jam tun Yakage Honjin-mae Pop-up”
The jam tun Yakage Honjin-mae Pop-up was held on the following dates.

- July 9, 2023 (Sunday) from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
The variety of products has been increasing year by year, with original items such as small accessories, parasols, bags, and clothing on display, creating an exciting atmosphere.
The parasols are made to order, taking about 1.5 to 2 months from order to completion.
The production of the parasols is handled by “Arigatou Farm”, a Type A employment support facility in Okayama City known for its meticulous craftsmanship.
New products such as wrap dresses, wide pants, and wrap skirts are also popular items.

Fabric Uchiwa
The “Fabric Uchiwa” is a perfect product for summer.
The front and back have different patterns, and the bamboo construction is sturdy, making it easy to fan yourself with its slightly elongated shape.
With geometric patterns and pop designs of plants and animals, each one brightens up the surroundings, and just holding it lifts your spirits.
Not only does it provide coolness, but when displayed on a shelf or wall, it also serves as a decorative item. A friend purchased one as a small gift.
Small Stool
The “Small Stool” left a very cute impression.
The cover can be removed and washed.
It can be used as a children's chair or ottoman, or simply to display something for enjoyment.
I heard that it can support adults weighing up to 100 kg.
You can purchase African fabric by the yard (1 yard = approximately 92 cm), so those skilled in sewing might consider making chair covers for replacements.
