Interview with Risa Ishimoto, Manager of Konoito tsumugu

I spoke with Manager Risa Ishimoto about her thoughts and commitment to indigo products.

Risa Ishimoto's Background

What kind of work do you usually do?

Ishimoto

Originally, I worked in an office at a factory.

I actually wanted to be involved in manufacturing alongside the men, but it was quite difficult.

When the knit division was established and the opportunity arose to open a store specializing in indigo, I came here.

Of course, I do customer service, but it is also my job to convey the real voices of customers to the factory.

As the only directly managed store, I deliver real feedback to the factory and discuss what kind of products can attract customers.

Because I have a strong passion, sometimes battles break out with the factory staff (laughs).

When do you feel a sense of fulfillment?

Ishimoto

I am very happy when a customer who has visited once comes back again.

My motto is that the goal is not just to have visitors buy something, but to let them know the charm of indigo and make them think, "That was fun! I want to come back again!"

Therefore, during customer service, I make it a point to convey not only the charm of indigo but also the possibilities of color fading and washing methods.

Because it is a delicate product, I believe it is better for customers to purchase after fully understanding it.

I also receive many inquiries about how to wear the products and sizing.

I often receive direct messages on Instagram.

Since indigo knitwear is rare, I think many people struggle with color combinations.

I make it a point to convey styling tips and what to pair with the inner wear at the store.

Commitment to Products

Please tell us about your commitment to the products.

Ishimoto

There are three main points.

The first is product creation using Whole Garment.

Typically, knit products are made by sewing together separate parts like sleeves and the front body.

In contrast, Whole Garment allows for the entire garment to be knitted in three dimensions as a single piece.

There is no tightness in the fabric, and the comfort of wearing is very pleasant.

It is also possible to achieve a size that can be worn unisex for both men and women.

Whole Garment and WHOLEGARMENT are registered trademarks of Shima Seiki Manufacturing, Ltd.

Knitwear

The second is commitment to yarn.

There are two main types of yarn: single yarn and double yarn.

Single yarn is a single strand of yarn as it is spun, while double yarn is made by twisting two single yarns together.

Denim mostly uses single yarn, but at tsumugu, we use custom double yarn.

Using double yarn allows for beautiful color expression and enhances strength and stability.

The third is commitment to the shades of indigo.

At tsumugu, we have dedicated knitting machines for indigo yarn and only use yarn dyed in specialized vats.

The color fading is gradual, allowing wearers to enjoy the aging process for a long time.

Future Developments of Konoito tsumugu

Are there any challenges you would like to take on in the future?

Ishimoto

I would like to develop knit products that can be worn all year round and increase the variety of colors based on indigo.

I also want to expand the unisex image further.

In clothing stores, there is often a perception that they are primarily for women, but in reality, many men also purchase.

Since many knit products can be worn unisex, I hope many people, regardless of gender, will pick them up.

Discovering the Charm of Indigo at Konoito tsumugu

Through the interview, I felt the deep love for indigo at Konoito tsumugu.

Indigo products are profound, with changes brought about by dyeing methods and manufacturing techniques.

When you visit the Bikan Historical Area, be sure to take a peek into the wonderful world of indigo.
