We spoke with Maeo Michinobu, the chairperson of the Kurashiki Spring Night Light Executive Committee, and Ikeda Miko about the highlights and their thoughts.
Lights that make you want to take pictures together
Please tell us about the points you focused on.
Maeo
Until now, the lights lacked three-dimensionality, so there were few opportunities to take pictures with the lights in the background.
I want people to take pictures not just of the lights, but with the lights and everyone together.
This year’s point is that we created three-dimensional lights.
Three-dimensional lights will appear, such as the indigo umbrella lights at Kurashiki SOLA and the bamboo ball lights at Kurashiki Ivy Square.
I hope people will stand in front of the lights and take pictures together.
Ikeda
Every year, the shadow pictures change a little, and they are evolving.
There are several new shadow pictures, including one with a story about "How many arrows will hit the target?".
Maeo
Until now, the movements were simple, but they have increased and become a bit longer.
There are also spring-like elements, such as the flower-blooming old man and butterflies.

What are your thoughts on holding the event?
Maeo
I want to incorporate new things every year so that everyone can enjoy it.
This time, we put in even more effort, so there will be more new lights appearing.
There have been years when we couldn't hold the event due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we have been reducing the program to avoid contact.
This year, I wanted to hold it as it used to be, but there are still some concerns, so we made it as fulfilling as possible within the limits we could.
This is an event where you can feel the arrival of spring, and I want everyone to enjoy it as much as possible, especially since they couldn't enjoy it during the pandemic.
I would be happy if it becomes an event that encourages everyone to go out.
I also want you to be moved by the new lights.
How do you want visitors to enjoy the event?
Ikeda
This year, there are more contents, so I hope people will come multiple times, not just once, to enjoy the lights.
There are also lights that will appear on specific days, so I think you can enjoy them repeatedly.

Although the revival of contact-based events was not possible due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 16th Kurashiki Spring Night Light has been enriched as much as possible within the limits.
I am a big fan of the Kurashiki Spring Night Light and look forward to the event every year.
One of the reasons I love it is that the gentle Japanese light fits very well in the moist Bikan Historical Area at night, providing a sense of healing.
The changes every year also make me feel, "I have to go this year too!"
With new areas and lights appearing, I have a feeling that its charm will continue to grow.
