[Held on Sunday, May 24] Kurashiki Parole 〜 Every participating sake brewery will be there! Join a sake bar-hopping event in the town of Kurashiki

One thing that surprised me after moving from Tokyo to Kurashiki in December 2023 was how many independently run izakaya there are.

However, many of these places have counter seating, and seeing the locals having a great time can make it daunting to go in alone.

I had been wanting to explore independently run izakaya when I heard that a bar-hopping event called “Kurashiki Parole” has been held since last year (2025) in the area between JR Kurashiki Station and the Bikan Historical Area.

Intrigued, I spoke with the organizers about how to take part on the day and what inspired them to hold the event.

What is Kurashiki Parole?

Kurashiki Parole is a bar-hopping event held at 19 restaurants serving sake within about 1 km of JR Kurashiki Station.

It began in 2024 as a tent event at Achi Terrace Kurashiki. This year (2026), its third year, it will once again be held as a bar-hopping event, following last year’s format. The organizer is Sake Kobo Aoe, a liquor store that received the Kurashiki Historic Business Recognition Award in 2013 and has supported Kurashiki’s sake culture since the Meiji era.

How to participate

You need to purchase a participation ticket to take part in Kurashiki Parole.

Advance tickets cost 1,000 yen and same-day tickets cost 1,500 yen. Students receive a student discount of 200 yen off either ticket price. Bring your student ID when purchasing or exchanging your ticket.

Advance tickets are available at the following locations:

• Sake Kobo Aoe
• Participating restaurants
• PassMarket (online sales)

If you purchase through PassMarket, you can participate after exchanging your ticket for a paper ticket at the information booth in front of Hamayaki Marumoto, the sake brewery, on the day of the event.

Once you have your ticket, visit a participating venue that interests you and show your ticket. Pay the otoshi charge, and they will stamp your ticket so you can enter.

Details of the otoshi and its price on the day will be posted on the official Kurashiki Parole Instagram account starting Thursday, May 7, so be sure to check it.

Interview with the organizers

We asked Aoe Mika, organizer of Kurashiki Parole, what inspired her to start the event and what it means to her.

Could you tell us what inspired you to plan Kurashiki Parole?

There are many wonderful restaurants within walking distance of JR Kurashiki Station, but some people may hesitate to visit an independently run place for the first time.
Many of the customers who come to Sake Kobo Aoe are local people looking to enjoy drinks at home, or tourists buying drinks to have in their hotel rooms.

But Kurashiki has so many wonderful places serving sake, so I started the event because I wanted more people to discover what makes Kurashiki special by going out for drinks in the evening.

All the venues are within about 1 km of JR Kurashiki Station, making this an event that visitors from outside Kurashiki City and Okayama Prefecture can enjoy, too.

So you can enjoy sake from breweries all over Japan?

Sake Kobo Aoe works with breweries across Japan, so I asked breweries throughout the country, including those in Okayama Prefecture, to support the event. I hope it will help build connections between breweries and restaurants in Kurashiki City.

The participating restaurants are also teaming up with breweries for the event, and representatives from every brewery will be in Kurashiki on the day. What’s more, the restaurants will continue serving sake from those breweries for three months after the event.

I hope Kurashiki’s sake culture will continue to thrive after the one-day Kurashiki Parole event, too.

Do you have any recommendations for how to enjoy the event?

Please come along with friends! Last year (2025), 13 venues took part, but this year there are 19, so I recommend planning your route in advance using the map or the official Instagram account.

Some venues offer an “refill set” when you arrive, so you’ll have to decide whether to have just one drink or go for the refill set. We also have student-discount tickets, so we hope lots of young people will join us.

We asked students at Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts to design the participation tickets and posters. Last year, the students took part too, happily looking at their designs displayed in the venues.

At the previous event, the first time Kurashiki Parole was held as a bar-hopping event, participants came from neighboring prefectures such as Hiroshima and Kagawa, and some even stayed overnight.
