Interview with Morita Tomofumi D.O.

I spoke in detail with Dr. Morita Tomofumi.
I think various people with different issues come in. Is there anything that left an impression on you?
Morita (no honorifics)
Of course, I am happy when problems are resolved and people get better.
However, what leaves an impression on me is the cases of those who did not improve much. Here, we also see people with symptoms that are difficult to recover from.
At those times, I think deeply about "what can be done" every time they come in. Even if the progress is not very good, when I ask those who come back, they say, "It's more comfortable to come here."
While it is difficult to eliminate symptoms, I can ease headaches a little or alleviate some of the autonomic nervous system disturbances caused by fear of illness.
I strive to lighten the burdens on the body and mind as much as possible. By doing so, I hope to help change their perspective on life and consciousness for the better, even just a little.
What prompted you to start osteopathy?
Morita
It was when I saw my supervisor practicing osteopathy at the orthopedic clinic where I first worked. I felt, "This is different from what I learned in school," and became interested in the idea that there is a different way of thinking than physical therapy.
As I continued studying osteopathy, my desire to deepen my understanding of it grew stronger. When practicing in orthopedics, it becomes orthopedic rehabilitation treatment.
I wanted to address autonomic nervous system issues, treat children, and approach gynecology. These thoughts accumulated, leading me to decide to become independent.
I opened my practice just as the COVID-19 pandemic began.
It was tough, but for me, it was truly a start from zero, and gradually, the number of people coming in has increased since then.

I hear you also treat babies.
Morita
There was a one-month-old baby who had trouble breastfeeding.
When I asked about the birth during the consultation, I learned that it took a little time due to vacuum extraction. I thought that the pressure during passage through the birth canal might have affected the nerves around the back of the head.
Upon checking, it was clearly hard, so when I relaxed that area, there was a good response. Knowledge of obstetrics, pediatrics, and developmental biology all connect to create a reasonable treatment.
What is the underlying philosophy of osteopathy?
Morita
Humans are naturally designed to heal themselves when they are injured.
However, if the body is twisted or compressed, making blood flow poor, healing becomes difficult.
I believe that if we can remove that twist and return to the original position, the inherent recovery ability will be easier to activate. Our job is to help draw out that recovery ability.

How do you want to proceed in the future?
Morita
For example, if someone becomes less anxious due to treatment and can go to school, or if someone who had difficulty working due to stomach pain can start working, that person’s life will begin to move, and the gears of their life will start turning.
I hope that the health of the people in Kurashiki improves. I consider that one of the social contributions I can make.
Eventually, I want to develop this place into a base like an "Osteopathy Center." I want to focus on creating a space where several osteopaths who have received international standard education can support the health of the local people in Kurashiki.

Osteopathy that draws out inherent abilities
Morita D.O. flipped through a very thick textbook and explained things clearly and carefully. The author, who has been involved in both Western and Eastern medicine, has suffered from lower back pain for about 16 years, and when feeling unwell, has long struggled with a dull pain. I had half given up, but I decided to consult and experience osteopathy on this occasion.
After sharing my medical history, he carefully checked the flow of my body from head to toe and gradually adjusted it. After the treatment, I felt as if I had grown taller, and it seemed like my body, which had been stiff for many years, had started to move.
Pain and anxiety are difficult to articulate and often hard for others to understand. Even so, I felt that with Morita D.O., he would listen to the voice within my body and think of ways to improve together.
