Every Saturday, people of all kinds gather at the rehearsal venue, from students and office workers to children and older adults. They are the community cast members appearing in the participatory musical “K: The Detective-less Detective Opera,” which will be staged in March 2026 (Reiwa 8).
With the performances approaching, rehearsals have entered their final stages.

A completely original detective mystery
“K: The Detective-less Detective Opera” is an original work created each year with the community cast at its heart, drawing on people and history connected to the local area.
This time, the protagonist is Ginji, a yakuza on the run after stealing money.
As the title “Detective-less” suggests, Ginji is mistaken for “the great detective K” and gets caught up in a murder case involving the inheritance of a wealthy family.
Who committed the crime? Can Ginji, the fake detective, solve the case? The ending is sure to intrigue, but the characters’ feelings are also part of the story’s appeal.
At first, Ginji seems to be watching for a chance to escape. But as everyone comes to rely on him and need him as a real detective, he begins earnestly pursuing the truth.
There are plenty of moments when you can’t help laughing at the unreliable fake detective, but also look out for how each character’s feelings change and for the vulnerability of people who end up lying.
The story gains real depth and, before you know it, leaves you with a warm feeling in your heart.
The story is set in Mabi
In 1945, near the end of the Pacific War, novelist Yokomizo Seishi evacuated to the Okada district of Mabi, Kurashiki City.
As Yokomizo Seishi learned about the local history and exchanged with the people who lived there, he created detective novels starring “the great detective Kindaichi Kosuke.”
The culture associated with Yokomizo Seishi and Kindaichi Kosuke is still carefully passed down by local people today. It includes Yokomizo Seishi's Wartime Residence, which is open to the public free of charge and retains the atmosphere of his wartime life, and the “1000 Kindaichi Kosuke” event, which draws Yokomizo Seishi fans from across Japan.
By taking the great detective as its theme, this musical is expected to honor the journey so far while shining a light on Mabi’s appeal through a new form of expression.
Someone you know might be performing: 35 community cast members
The cast of “K: The Detective-less Detective Opera” includes 35 community members ranging in age from 5 to 72.
Rehearsals began in May 2025.
They have worked from the very basics, such as how to project their voices and how to stand.
Watanabe Yasuki, who is taking on a musical for the first time, says he decided to take the plunge after seeing the previous musical and thinking, “I’d like to perform in one myself.”
Asked how he feels about his first time, he said, “I find it difficult to convey things through acting without relying on my voice and words.”
Along with acting, there is singing and dancing, so rehearsals look demanding even just to watch. But laughter can often be heard from the rehearsal room, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly.
You can also hear the kind of natural reminders that come from members who have rehearsed together for 10 months, such as, “You were supposed to be a little farther this way.”
Even amid the hard work, I was struck by how they approached rehearsals while enjoying themselves with their fellow cast members.
The children are serious, too.
They show a level of expressiveness you would never guess from their adorable appearance.
Every time I see them, their performance visibly improves, and before I know it, I find myself unable not to cheer them on.

The appeal of this musical lies not only in enjoying the stage performance itself, including the singing and acting, but also in the process of community cast members from different ages and walks of life coming together to create a single work.
From the production, brought to completion through 11 months of practice, you’ll feel not only its polish but also the passion and bonds between the cast.
