What is the “Shukuba-machi Yakage Sunday Morning Market”?
The “Shukuba-machi Yakage Sunday Morning Market” is a morning market lined with stalls selling sundries, sweets, and food from food trucks, held on the second Sunday of every month at Yakage Machiya Exchange Center.
Starting this time (April 14, 2024), the “Yakage Nishimachi Marche,” held at Yakage Nishimachi Event Plaza, is also being held at the same time.
The hours are 8 a.m. to noon at Yakage Machiya Exchange Center and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Yakage Nishimachi Event Plaza.
From April to October, it is held an hour earlier, starting at 8 a.m.
Moving from Yakage Machiya Exchange Center to Yakage Nishimachi Event Plaza
The writer arrived at the temporary parking lot on the former Marunaka site at around 8:15 a.m. and headed to Yakage Machiya Exchange Center, about a one-minute walk away.
From all around the venue came the delicious smells of curry, yakitori, and more. Many people were enjoying curry, soba, and other foods in the venue’s dining area.
First, the writer made a round of the venue and bought baked goods and bread.
After that, the writer walked for about five minutes from Yakage Machiya Exchange Center to Yakage Nishimachi Event Plaza.
Thirsty, the writer bought white peach amazake.
The refreshing taste of white peach blended nicely with the bitterness of amazake.
After 9 a.m., the number of people at Nishimachi Event Plaza began to grow.
When you shop at Yakage Nishimachi Marche, you receive a ticket to exchange for a garapon lottery draw.
When the writer tried the lottery, they won a Yakappi bread.
Apparently, Yakappi bread is awarded to 100 people in a drawing.
Nail Care and Nail Art
Among the vendors at Yakage Machiya Exchange Center was “akko nail,” a nail salon in the local town of Yakage.
Many people apparently have nail problems, such as “my nails split into layers easily” or “my nails break easily.” As I too have started to struggle with splitting nails and hangnails as I’ve gotten older, I decided to ask for advice.
After consulting with the owner, I bought the nail oil I’d been wanting for a while to prevent dry nails.
The owner said, “This is only my second time as a vendor, but I’m happy that so many people come from far away, including Fukuyama, after seeing the flyer.”
Color Salt Workshop
I visited a booth selling color salt and offering a workshop.
Color salt is apparently salt that has been dyed.
It’s nice to use color salt to express feelings that are usually hard to put into words.
The workshop was popular, too.
Since you can’t put the color salt back in, you carefully add it to the bottle while imagining how the finished piece will look.
Once you’ve finished adding the color salt, secure the decorations with water-based glue.

I went to the Sunday morning market in the post town of Yakage several times a few years ago. I remember that local artists and volunteers sold small goods and light meals there.
When I visited again this time after several years, I was surprised by the number of vendors and how many had come from outside town.
The next market will be Sunday, May 12, from 8 a.m.
