Kissa Akari-sha, near the tourist destination of Gokei in Soja City, is a traditional-house café that opened on December 1, 2024.
Inside Kissa Akari-sha
The building is a historic residence said to be about 120 years old.
The owner spent about two and a half years fully renovating the interior themselves. Apart from specialized work such as electrical and plumbing, the owner and their family renovated almost all of the interior.
The floor, which was once covered with tatami mats, now has tables and chairs on a wooden floor, making it more comfortable for older visitors.
The warm space is lined with old tools, a rotary phone, and books the owner has enjoyed over the years. With pleasant background music, you can spend a relaxing time here.
Kissa Akari-sha’s Menu
At Kissa Akari-sha, the owner’s homemade cakes and puddings are called “oyatsu” (snacks).
They say they value “unpretentious flavors that never get old, like something made by your family.”
One of the most popular items is the plate featuring small portions of several kinds of cake.
The selection changes every one to two months, and it’s a favorite with many customers.
Coffee made with beans from Sunny Day Coffee in Takebe-cho, Kita Ward, Okayama City, is a popular drink.
On the day of our visit, we tried the Decadent Three-Cheese Plate and coffee.
When the plate arrived, its colorful presentation of three kinds of cake and coffee jelly immediately lifted our spirits.
The selection at the time of our visit included Basque cheesecake, blueberry rare cheesecake, and “an Basque” with matcha and sweet red bean paste.
The Basque cheesecake stood out for its soft, creamy texture.
The blueberry rare cheesecake had a pleasant sweet-and-tart flavor, while the an Basque paired moderately sweet red bean paste with a perfectly crisp base.
The coffee jelly is made with coffee brewed at the café.
Its pronounced bitterness makes it a nice contrast between bites of cake.
You can enjoy several kinds of snacks at once, and each portion is generous, making this a thoroughly satisfying plate.
Among the individual items, the Basque cheesecake is especially popular.
The coffee is an original blend made exclusively for the café by Sunny Day Coffee. The beans are ground after you order, and the coffee is carefully brewed.
It has a pronounced bitterness and pairs exceptionally well with the snacks.
There are plenty of other tempting options, including homemade lemonade and ginger ale, as well as cream sodas named after Gokei and Okayama.
