May, with its pleasant temperatures warmer than spring and cooler than summer, is also a season when outdoor food and drink events increase significantly.
Among the various events held in Kurashiki, the one that particularly caught my attention is "BEER SMILES", where six unique breweries from both inside and outside the prefecture gather in Kurashiki.
I would like to introduce "BEER SMILES," a spring outing destination recommended for those who love alcohol.
What is "BEER SMILES"
"BEER SMILES" is a craft beer festival that will be held on May 16 (Saturday) and 17 (Sunday), 2026 at Achi Terrace Kurashiki.
On the day of the event, six craft beer breweries from western Japan, mainly from Okayama Prefecture, will gather.
The furthest brewery will come from Nara Prefecture. You can enjoy craft beers from distant places that are not often available. Being able to compare a variety of unique craft beers is one of the highlights of BEER SMILES.
In addition, you can also enjoy local sake from Okayama and liqueurs made with fruits from Okayama Prefecture, as well as other alcoholic beverages besides craft beer. Furthermore, seven local restaurants loved by the people of Kurashiki will set up stalls.

There will also be a live music stage on the day.
You can enjoy comparing craft beers while soaking in the music, or come to enjoy delicious local food from Kurashiki. There will also be sweets and soft drinks available, making it an event that children can enjoy as well.

Can you tell us about the background of the BEER SMILES event?

In Okayama City, there is a large beer festival called "Okayama Hawa Koi Beer Festa." Since the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become difficult to hold it regularly, and voices arose from the staff and volunteers involved in that event saying, "We want to try holding a beer festival in Kurashiki as well," which was the initial trigger.
Now, beer festivals are being held all over the country. Since we wanted to hold one in Kurashiki, we started BEER SMILES in 2025.
Are there any changes from the last time?

Compared to the first event, the food has increased with more shops from Kurashiki. Since it is a beer festival held in Kurashiki, we made an effort to focus on shops that have a connection to Kurashiki.
Also, since there were no sweet options at the first event, this time we will have a crepe shop providing crepes and shaved ice. I think the lineup has become more enjoyable for children as well.
What are the highlights of the event?

Regarding the breweries, this time we have LAMP BEER STUDIO and Fukutsunagi Food Brewery, both of which are female brewers, participating for the first time. They are very popular breweries, and there were many voices within the executive committee saying, "We want to invite them!" Please enjoy this opportunity.
All the food stalls are beloved by the locals. Since there are delicious dishes available, I hope people will feel free to come just to enjoy the food.
Do you have any recommended ways to enjoy the event?

It is rare to have the opportunity to talk with the makers of craft beer. Please be sure to ask them about their passion. Perhaps the brewers will find new ideas for craft beer from conversations with customers.

Although it is an alcohol event, people of all ages, including children, are very welcome. Since many people who enjoy craft beer tend to take their time enjoying their drinks, I think the atmosphere at the venue will be relatively calm and relaxed.

Not only was the beer tasting enjoyable, but I also remember having fun sharing thoughts with friends. The lively explanations from the brewers at the time of purchase were irresistible for beer lovers.
Achi Terrace Kurashiki, the venue, is located about a 5-minute walk from JR Kurashiki Station. Admission is free, so feel free to stop by for just one drink or to take a quick look around the venue.
