Interview with Eridate Shigeki about the hats from Kamogata
Hats are a specialty product of Kamogata.
We asked President Eridate Shigeki about his thoughts on them.
About the company's history and turning points
Please tell us about the beginnings of Eridate Hat Manufacturing Co.
Eridate
My father founded the company in 1960. Kamogata was originally a wheat-producing area, and the noodle-making industry was also thriving.
There was a culture of making hats using the byproduct of wheat. At first, my father made hats for export to overseas wholesalers. During the period of rapid economic growth, it was said to be so busy that trucks were coming and going every day.
Did you intend to take over the family business from the beginning?
Eridate
No, not at all. I worked for an apparel company for about 15 years after graduating from university.
I returned when I was 40, but to be honest, the industry was shrinking, and I thought, "This will probably go out of business."
However, as I watched the craftsmen at work, I realized that "there are things that can only be done here." That was a significant turning point.
Overwhelming commitment to hat making
What do you consider the most important aspect of hat making?
Eridate
The most important thing is "functionality."
No matter how stylish a hat is, if it feels uncomfortable or loses its shape quickly, it is meaningless. The fit of a hat is very precise, and even just getting a haircut can change how it feels.
When customers say, "I used to dislike hats, but I can wear this one," it is the greatest joy for me as a craftsman.
Please tell us about the strengths in technology that other companies do not have.
Eridate
Typically, designs are considered within the "range of what can be made," but we do the opposite. We start with the ideal design and then think about how to realize it. By challenging difficult shapes, our skills are honed.
Specifically, we use specialized sewing machines designed to prevent unraveling and combine "blades (tape-like materials) and fabric" that require adjustments down to the millimeter.
There are very few places in Japan that can perform this docking technology.
Relationship with the community and future prospects
What are your thoughts about the local areas of Kamogata and Kurashiki?
Eridate
Kamogata is located between Ibara and Kojima, surrounded by denim-producing areas. It is because of this location that we can use local denim and canvas.
Also, establishing a store in the Bikan Historical Area of Kurashiki was a significant turning point. By directly interacting with customers, their feedback of "I would like this to be done here" has become a driving force to enhance our design capabilities.
Please tell us about the initiatives you are currently focusing on.
Eridate
We have started a project to make school hats for local elementary schools and hats for the staff of Ibara Railway. We hope to let people know that "local materials are this good" and foster a love for their hometown.

First of all, I would be happy if people could learn that there is a wonderful industry of "hats" in this region.
Hats can change your impression more easily than clothes and brighten your mood.
