Interview with Kuromyo Tatsuki
We spoke with Kuromyo Tatsuki, a young employee working at Goshikigai Garakutasu.
The fulfillment of work in the third year of employment
What aspects of your current job do you find fulfilling?
Kuromyo
First of all, the fulfillment I feel at the Denim Lodge comes from interacting with tourists, which allows me to directly feel that I am contributing to the community.
The rest area and guest house that also serves as a tourist information center is something that has not existed in Kojima Jeans Street until now.
Since I can recommend scenic spots and delicious local restaurants that only local staff would know, I hope that contributes to the satisfaction of tourists.
I want them to enjoy Kojima Jeans Street not just by shopping, but also through food and experiences.
I believe there are many design tasks as well; how do you find fulfillment in that area?
Kuromyo
The most fulfilling moment is when I receive words of gratitude.
Since clients come from various industries and fields, it's enjoyable to learn something new every time. It broadens my perspective, and I feel like I am gaining problem-solving skills and opportunities to take on new challenges.
I feel happy when clients appreciate the additional suggestions I make beyond their requests of "I would like this done."
You are in your third year since joining the company. Have you faced any difficulties at work?
Kuromyo
Actually, I don't have many memories of struggling yet; I enjoy everything I do. I tend to see every situation as a growth opportunity.
If I encounter any problems, I find it easy to ask for help in a supportive environment, so I feel secure working here.
However, presenting on the first day of joining might be a struggle for some people... I'm glad I'm positive about it!
Please tell us about the atmosphere among employees and within the company.
Kuromyo
I think there is a friendly atmosphere where it's easy to communicate what you think without regard to hierarchy.
Because of that, even young employees like me find it easy to say, "I want to try this" to those above us. Moreover, we receive proper support for initiatives started by young employees, and I feel like I am working in an environment where I can challenge myself without limits.
The people of Kojima who feel love for their hometown
Please tell us about the charm of Kojima and Ajino as you see it.
Kuromyo
I think the area around Ajino is a city with positive changes.
Perhaps because it is a tourist destination with Kojima Jeans Street, it is interesting to see how new facilities and shops are being built, and how the population is increasing with new apartments; the changes over time are fascinating and make the city never boring.
Additionally, there are many people with a strong love for their hometown.
In the past, there was the Ajino shopping street where Kojima Jeans Street is now located. People who remember the prosperous days of that shopping street often say, "We want to revive the vibrancy of that time." Those involved with Kojima Jeans Street particularly have a strong desire for this, and I feel the love for the local area.
In such a community, how do you want to strive forward? If you have any goals, please share them.
Kuromyo
I want to further invigorate Kojima Jeans Street through the operation of the guest house.
I believe there are completely different challenges and difficulties in operating a lodging facility in a nationally famous tourist destination with many hotels compared to running a guest house on Kojima Jeans Street.
As for how to invigorate it... to be honest, I haven't thought of specific ideas yet. However, there is no correct answer in community development, so I want to enjoy the process.

In a world where the internet and social media are close at hand, I think many people feel down by comparing themselves to others. However, I hope you can find something that becomes your own axis without being too caught up in others.
If you can find the overlap between what you love and what society needs, you may find enjoyment and fulfillment in your work.
Also, since I am currently involved in community development in Kojima, I hope more people will become interested in community development someday.
Even if you don't get involved right away, the experiences you gain in your 20s and 30s can be utilized in community development when you reach your 40s and 50s... I would be happy if such options arise for many people.
Conclusion
I had the impression that many people at Kojima Jeans Street gather with pride and dignity, and the term "love for their hometown" that Kuromyo mentioned during the interview resonated deeply with me.
I feel that a desire to "revitalize the local area" is essential for community development.
I want to keep an eye on how Garakutasu will utilize its diverse proposal capabilities and know-how to invigorate the region in the future.
