There’s an annual event where you can enjoy exploring Kurashiki’s restaurants and sampling their food while experiencing their flavors and atmosphere: “Harenomino Kurashiki,” commonly known as “Harekura”!
The author took part in the past and was delighted, thinking, “I can’t believe I can eat such delicious food for such a great price!”
Here’s how to take part in Harenomino Kurashiki and make the most of it.

What is Harenomino Kurashiki?
Harenomino Kurashiki is a food- and bar-hopping event held for just one day each year.
Bring a ticket to a participating venue and you’ll receive a drink and a food item.
It began in 2012, and 2019 marked its ninth edition.
In 2019, it will be held on Monday, November 4 (a substitute holiday).
On the day, you’ll see lines at venues all around Kurashiki, and the popular event brings the city to life.
It’s fun for both people who enjoy alcohol and those who don’t drink.
How to take part in Harenomino Kurashiki
You can take part in Harenomino Kurashiki by purchasing tickets.
There are two types of tickets:

Take your ticket to a participating venue, and at each place you’ll receive a set of one drink and one food item for each ticket.
You can use multiple tickets at one venue, and a booklet of five tickets can also be shared among several people.
Advance tickets cost ¥700 each.
If you plan to use five tickets, buying them in advance is a better deal.
Some people use one set per person; others, for example, reserve two sets for three people and buy additional individual tickets on the day as needed.
No worries if you have tickets left: “Ato Nomino”
Although the event lasts just one day, there’s a system called “Ato Nomino” so you don’t have to worry about having tickets left over.
From the day after the event, Tuesday, November 5, through Monday, November 11, unused tickets can be used as ¥700 vouchers at participating Ato Nomino venues.

No change is given, but you can use multiple tickets at one venue.
How to get tickets
There are two ways to get tickets:
- Reserve through the Harekura official website email form
- Buy them at participating Harekura venues or participating ticket outlets
If you reserve tickets using the email form, visit the Harenomino Kurashiki office (inside Dana Dua) to pay and collect them.
Tickets can be collected at the following times.
If you reserve in advance, you can still get the advance-ticket price when collecting them on the day of the event.

Harenomino Kurashiki 2019 participating venues
There were 63 participating venues in 2019!
Thirteen venues were taking part for the first time. They were all within an area roughly one kilometer square, and all could be reached on foot from JR Kurashiki Station.
The wide-ranging lineup included Japanese, Western, Chinese, and Korean cuisine, yakiniku, kushiyaki, izakaya, cafes, bars, and more.

For one ticket costing ¥700 (or ¥800 for a same-day ticket), you can quickly experience a venue’s food, atmosphere, and service for yourself.
It’s also a convenient way to check out places before choosing one for a date, business dinner, year-end party, or other occasion where you don’t want to make the wrong choice.
One of the best things is being able to casually visit upscale places and venues that are usually hard to get into without a reservation.
Some people say, “I thought bars were intimidating, but I had a great time when I visited one through Harekura, so I’m planning to go again.”
When the author took part in the past, they also discovered many places they wanted to visit again.

Some venues offer special dishes that are only available at Harekura.
Even regular menu items are often available at a more reasonable price than usual.
Sample a variety of dishes in one day
The participating venues cover a wide range of categories, so one of the attractions is being able to sample a little of everything in one day.
For example, you could enjoy dishes from specialist restaurants: start with hors d’oeuvres, then sashimi, fried food, udon to finish, and dessert at the end.
It’s also nice to decide what to eat on the spot based on how hungry you are and what you feel like—“Maybe I’ll go for curry after all.”
