In 2012, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles held their autumn camp at Muscat Stadium in Kurashiki, and I went to see it. I remember Manager Senichi Hoshino was in front of the first base bench, intently watching the players practice.
The following year, the Rakuten Eagles won the league championship and faced the Central League champions, the Yomiuri Giants, winning the Japan Series in the final Game 7. It was the first Japan Series championship for Mr. Hoshino, including during his active playing days.
Hearing that items related to Mr. Senichi Hoshino would be on display, I decided to visit.
From the glove he used in the fourth grade of elementary school to photos of his championship celebration and uniforms, over 100 items were on display, allowing me to learn about the long journey Mr. Hoshino has taken. I will report on this passionate exhibition.
The Path of the Fighting General: Overview of the Senichi Hoshino "Dream Path" Exhibition
The exhibition will be held from March 1 (Saturday), 2025, to March 30 (Sunday), 2025, at the entrance hall of Kurashiki City Art Museum.
Items on display include the glove he used as a child, photos and newspaper articles from his time at Okayama Prefectural Kurashiki Commercial High School, and uniforms from his time as a player and manager when he won championships, showcasing about 100 very valuable items that convey the passionate spirit of Mr. Senichi Hoshino.
These items were donated to Kurashiki City from the Senichi Hoshino Memorial Museum, which closed in 2021.
Reflecting on the Life of Senichi Hoshino through His Belongings
Upon entering the exhibition space, the first thing that caught my eye was a photo of Manager Hoshino being lifted in celebration after winning the championship. The uniforms and shoes from that time were also on display, and I was able to see them up close.
He achieved the remarkable feat of leading three professional baseball teams to championships, and there are items from his time in Kurashiki that reflect that journey.
Since it was spring break during the exhibition, there were families visiting as well. Many people were taking their time to view the displays, and it seemed that each person was reminiscing about Mr. Hoshino in their own way.
The Glove My Mother Bought Me in the Fourth Grade
One of the most impressive items on display was the "glove my mother bought me for the first time."
According to the display description, this is the glove that Mr. Senichi Hoshino received from his mother when he was in the fourth grade. It cost 1,000 yen at that time.
After Mr. Hoshino's father passed away, his mother raised him and his two sisters alone. It is said that her monthly salary was around 7,000 to 8,000 yen, so this glove was quite expensive.
I imagined how happy young Hoshino must have been and what it felt like when he first put his hand into the glove.
The glove is small, and while there are many areas where the color has faded, it seems to be in very good condition.
In fact, this glove was reportedly given by Mr. Hoshino to the son of a friend of his sister. That son kept it for a long time and returned it when the Senichi Hoshino Memorial Museum was established.
This glove tells the story of Mr. Hoshino's beginnings as a baseball player.
Mr. Hoshino During His Time in Kurashiki in Elementary, Middle, and High School
An episode from an old book on display described "Hoshino-kun and Sadakane-kun." This gave a glimpse into Mr. Hoshino's elementary school days.
His classmate Sadakane-kun suffered from muscular dystrophy and could not walk. Therefore, Mr. Hoshino would carry Sadakane-kun on his back and walk for 30 minutes to school. The kind-hearted image of Mr. Hoshino comes to mind.
The above photo is from the baseball club at Mizushima Junior High School in Kurashiki City. Mr. Hoshino is in the middle of the back row. The photo below is a class photo from Okayama Prefectural Kurashiki Commercial High School, with Mr. Hoshino on the far right of the back row.
In the group photo of the Okayama Prefectural Kurashiki Commercial High School baseball team, Mr. Hoshino is the fourth person from the left in the back row. There was also a newspaper article from that time. They lost narrowly and ultimately did not make it to Koshien.
From the large mention of his name in the newspaper, it is clear that he was a player who received considerable attention. I knew that Mr. Hoshino was from Kurashiki, but I was not aware of his experiences in elementary, middle, and high school. Once again, I felt the image of Mr. Hoshino dedicated to baseball in Kurashiki.
Photos of the Fighting General Senichi Hoshino's "Dream Path" Celebration
After attending Meiji University, he was drafted first overall by the Chunichi Dragons. In 1974, he won the league championship. This is a photo from when the league championship was decided.
That year, he also received the Sawamura Award, given to the most outstanding pitcher. The joy of that time comes through in the photo.
It is said that he became known as the "Fiery Man" due to his passionate play.
What moved me deeply during the exhibition was the three championships and the scenes of being lifted as a manager.
This is a photo of the celebration when the Chunichi Dragons won the league championship in 1988.
In 2003, he achieved the league championship as the manager of the Hanshin Tigers.
And in 2013, he led the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles to the league championship and the championship of Japan. This was when Mr. Hoshino was 66 years old.
Looking at the photo of Mr. Hoshino soaring through the air during the celebration, my heart swells. I deeply savored the path of the fighting general who took years to reach the pinnacle of Japan. The joy on Mr. Hoshino's face when he was lifted, and the way he soared through the air during each championship celebration, were each different and deeply moving.
Conclusion
Seeing the precious items related to Mr. Hoshino made me feel the baseball spirit of Mr. Hoshino as something sacred. It was an exhibition where I could feel the journey of a young man who was born and raised in Kurashiki and devoted himself to baseball, living his baseball life with integrity.
Mr. Hoshino passed away in 2018 at the age of 70. I found myself wishing I could have heard more of his thoughts on baseball.
Also, seeing the glove that Mr. Hoshino received from his mother for the first time made me reflect on my own childhood, wondering if I have given my son something meaningful from the heart.
Every year, professional baseball games are held at Kurashiki Muscat Stadium. It seems that watching baseball will become even more enjoyable from now on.
