Recently, we often see SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
In Kurashiki City, it seems that they are actively promoting partnerships with companies and organizations working towards the achievement of the SDGs in the Takahashi River basin.
- “What can we do to create a sustainable world?”
- “What can I do?”
It can be difficult to think about this as an individual.
At this event, you can learn about the SDGs through familiar food with the theme “Let’s think about deliciousness in the future!”
Overview of SDGs “Let’s think about deliciousness in the future!” from Ario

The SDGs event “Let’s think about deliciousness in the future!” was held on September 10, 2022 (Saturday) from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the outdoor event square of Ario Kurashiki.
The participating stores are the following four:
- Tenmaya Happy's Food Hall
- Konohitokan
- ~Harejibie~ Happy Transporting Co., Ltd. Donguri
- Land Shrimp JAPAN Co., Ltd.
All of these stores are organizations and companies working to achieve the SDGs goals.
I participated in the event

On that day (September 10, 2022), it was unfortunate weather with light rain falling intermittently.
However, families were seen enjoying the fountain square next door, letting their children play in the water and coming to see what kind of event it was, creating a friendly atmosphere.
On the event stage, there was a panel explaining “food loss and food bank activities”, and I saw parents and children studying together.
- “Food loss” refers to ingredients and food that are disposed of even though they are still edible.
- “Food bank activities” refer to the activities of providing ingredients that are still safe to eat, which would otherwise be disposed of, free of charge to those in need and in the welfare sector.
I had never seriously thought about the SDGs before, and I became curious about what kind of companies and organizations are involved, so I decided to check it out.
Let’s take a look right away.
Konohitokan
First, I visited the booth of “Konohitokan.”
This organization buys ingredients that are about to be discarded to solve the “poverty problem” and the “food loss problem,” and they make canned food to distribute to children's cafeterias and welfare facilities.

With one can, you can fill the stomachs of 3 to 4 people when mixed with 2 cups of rice.
The meat can is flavored like meat sauce, so it can also be used in soups.
The fish can is said to be delicious, resembling chirashi sushi.
They also sold some unusual canned foods.
At the event, they held a workshop for “Yumekan,” a time capsule canned food.

You can pack letters and treasures and have them canned on the spot.
You can also decide when to open it after a few years.
A time capsule canned food that is one of a kind in the world. It’s a dream.
Land Shrimp JAPAN Co., Ltd.
Land Shrimp JAPAN Co., Ltd. is a company conducting research and development in Kibi Central Town, focusing on solving issues such as “food loss,” “greenhouse gas,” and “depopulation.”
They were selling edible crickets.

Insects are not a special food; currently, 2 billion people are eating them.
In particular, crickets are highly nutritious and contain high-quality protein.
They can be raised in a space-efficient manner, so they have a low environmental impact.
Children were very interested because they could eat their favorite insects.
Adults were a bit hesitant at first due to the appearance, but when they tried it cautiously, they said, “It tastes like chirimenjako and is delicious,” and some even bought it as a souvenir.

~Harejibie~ Happy Transporting Co., Ltd. Donguri

Finally, I would like to introduce the game meat store “~Harejibie~ Happy Transporting Co., Ltd. Donguri.”
They were selling bowls and side dishes made from deer and wild boar, as well as pet food.
While game meat has recently become popular as gourmet food, it is also a problem that it is disposed of as a pest.
By utilizing these resources without waste, they contribute to reducing waste and securing food, aligning with the SDGs goals.
The pet food includes toppings that can be mixed in when appetite is low, making it a nutritious meal.

Conclusion

This time, there were only four stores, but the measures against the spread of COVID-19 were well in place, with tents spaced apart, allowing for a leisurely visit.
I had not thought much about the SDGs before.
Through this event, I realized that not only should we avoid wasting food in our daily lives, but we should also consider what we can do for others, and that purchasing food that prevents food loss can also be a contribution.
This event will continue to introduce companies and organizations that are working on SDGs activities irregularly in the future.
If you have the opportunity, why not visit?
