Interview with Atelier Kosuzu owner Kaneda Hidehiro
I asked Kaneda Hidehiro, the owner of Atelier Kosuzu, about the inspiration behind its establishment and future prospects.

Can you tell us about your background, Kaneda?
Kaneda
I have been a photographer for about seven years.
Actually, my start as a working adult was in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. At that time, reading was one of my ways to relax, but it was a photo book I happened to pick up at a bookstore that sparked my interest in photography.
At 23, I changed jobs to a company specializing in wedding photography and began my serious journey as a photographer. After that, I worked in a studio taking family photos, children's portraits, coming-of-age ceremony photos, profile pictures, and promotional photos.
I continue to take photos while cherishing the experiences I gained from meeting many families and couples.
What motivated you to establish your own atelier?

Originally, I wanted to have a place where I could take photos myself.
However, what I truly wanted to create was not just a place for taking photos, but a space where people could casually drop by after the shoot and watch the growth of their children and the journey of their families.
What is the meaning behind the name "Atelier Kosuzu"?
Kaneda
The name "studio" has a somewhat business-like impression. I wanted it to be a place where people gather, rather than a place that constantly changes backgrounds and costumes to showcase novelty, so I chose the name "atelier."
Additionally, the name "Kosuzu" reflects my desire to gently weave connections between people.
Like the sound of a bell that can be faintly heard in a quiet place, I hope that when people listen closely, it will softly accompany their hearts, allowing visitors to naturally take a deep breath. This is my wish.
The flower language of the lily of the valley, which is my motif, is "happiness that returns again." I aim to create an atelier that people will remember at significant moments in their lives and that can accompany their families for a long time.
What points do you focus on during a shoot?

I aim to avoid stiff photography that feels like "Okay, let's take a picture."
For example, if we are shooting in the atelier, I believe that the shoot begins the moment you enter the room. I enjoy conversations with the guests, capturing the expressions and atmosphere I see that day naturally.
I do not force poses. However, I do carefully convey important aspects, such as how to stand beautifully in a kimono or dress for milestone photos.
I also focus on video recording because I want to preserve unique memories of that day, such as a mother's voice or a child's gestures.
I want to capture not only expressions but also what kind of clothes they were wearing and how big they were at that time.
What do you value at "Atelier Kosuzu"?
Kaneda
What I value is not forcing anything and not making others feel forced. I want to proceed with the shoot at each person's pace, considering their physical condition and feelings.
Also, rather than chasing trends, I want to leave behind photos that will not fade even when looked back upon in 10 or 20 years.
The phrase "their true self" is often used, but I feel it is difficult to express that true self at the first meeting.
That is why I want to deliver a photo that can naturally evoke memories when looked back upon, capturing "what I saw that day."
Can you share your vision for the future?

I value reaching those who need it.
Being completely reservation-based is also to ensure I have time to engage with each individual.
I aim to create a place that is loved for a long time, where people can casually drop by one day saying, "I came to have tea."

The reason I learned about Atelier Kosuzu was a single photo posted on Instagram. I was drawn to the beauty of the light and visited on the opening day.
In the atelier, a gentle atmosphere that reflects Kaneda's personality flows. As a place to preserve life's milestones, why not visit at least once?
