On hot summer days, and of course from the warm days of early spring, ice cream becomes delicious.
Those who love ice cream may also eat it in autumn and winter.
I also love ice cream.
Not only for ice cream lovers, but there is a gelato shop in Tamashima, Kurashiki City that I want many people to try.
Its name is Gelato Oblate. (GERATO OBLATE., hereafter Oblate).
The owner learned how to make gelato in Florence, Italy, the birthplace of gelato.
You can enjoy authentic gelato in the city center of Tamashima.
The owner, who once worked in milk delivery, recommends gelato made with milk from Kisuki Dairy.
Gelato made with plenty of pistachios from Sicily, Italy.
There are more than 10 types of delicious gelato lined up.
Additionally, new products and seasonal limited items regularly appear, which is also an attractive feature.
Let me introduce this enchanting gelato specialty store, Oblate!
Oblate is a gelato specialty store where you can enjoy the authentic taste of Florence, Italy

Oblate is a specialty gelato shop located in the center of Tamashima.
The representative gelato craftsman, Nishino Daisuke, went to Italy, the home of gelato, to train.
Moreover, the training location was Florence, the birthplace of gelato.
You can taste authentic gelato in Tamashima.
Oblate's gelato has been praised by people from Italy as having a "taste that rivals Italy."
▼ Additionally, Oblate has a distinctive exterior.

The owner designed it with the intention of creating an atmosphere that makes you feel like you are abroad.
I think the light teal exterior and the light blue sign are cute.
The white pillars and wood grain also feel nice.
In fact, the owner painted the exterior!
The interior is a warm space filled with a wooden atmosphere.

▼ The cold display case is lined with delicious gelato.

The store also has objects that remind you of Italy.

▼ A painting of the world heritage "Duomo," which symbolizes Florence, the training location

▼ A model of the Duomo

▼ The completion certificate from the training location, Accademia Riaci

Outside the Oblate store, there are benches.
Although eating inside the store is not allowed, you can enjoy gelato while sitting on the benches.
Additionally, there is a space for eating set up on the east side of the store (to the right when facing the front).

Furthermore, Oblate's stamp card is unique.
▼ It features an illustration of Oblate's exterior, which is cute.

Moreover, the first stamp is in the shape of a car, but from the second stamp onwards, the shape of the stamps changes.
What will be stamped is a surprise after you press it.
What is gelato?

Even if you have heard the word gelato, you may have questions like, "What exactly is it?" or "Is it different from ice cream?"
So, before introducing Oblate, let me briefly explain gelato.
The word "gelato" is a loanword derived from Italian.
Gelato was born in Florence, Italy.
In Italy, gelato refers to all types of ice cream and sorbets, but in Japan, ice cream and gelato are distinguished.
This distinction is defined by the "Standards for Components of Milk and Milk Products" based on the Food Sanitation Act.
In Japan, gelato is classified as a type of "ice milk".
| Name | Milk Solid Content | Milk Fat Content |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Cream | 15% or more | 8% or more |
| Ice Milk | 10% or more | 3% or more |
| Racto Ice | 3% or more | less than 3% |
Ice milk is defined as having milk solid content of 10% or more and less than 15%, and milk fat content of 3% or more and less than 8%.
All of these are collectively referred to as "ice cream types".
Additionally, there is also something called "frozen confection".
Gelato (ice milk) has less milk solid and milk fat content than ice cream, but this gives rise to the unique characteristics of gelato.
Because gelato has less milk solid and milk fat content, it can bring out the flavors of the ingredients directly.
Also, gelato has a lower air content, resulting in a smooth texture.
Oblate's gelato comes in single and double servings, with options for cups and cones
Information as of June 2023. Prices include tax
Oblate's gelato can be served in two types: cone and cup.
| Type | Price (including tax) |
|---|---|
| Single | 400 yen |
| Double | 500 yen |
Note that the price is the same for both cones and cups.
However, the "Pistachio" flavor is an additional 100 yen.
▼ Cone

▼ Cup

The cone has the advantage of leaving less waste after eating and can be eaten with one hand.

The "gelato-like" visual is also a point.
Children seem to prefer cones.
With a cone, it also looks great in photos.
For chocolate-flavored gelato, some people are particular about the harmony of flavors between the cone and the gelato.

Cups are easy to eat, which is an advantage.
With a cone, melted gelato drips down, but with a cup, your hands stay cleaner.
Additionally, Oblate's gelato comes in "single," which serves one flavor, and "double," which serves two flavors.
Note that for the double, it's also okay to serve two scoops of the same flavor.
Oblate's gelato is piled high and fluffy.
It feels like a great deal.
However, the aftertaste of the gelato is refreshing, so you don't feel like you've eaten too much when you finish.
After actually trying it, I thought the portion was just right.
However, if you eat a double in a cone, be careful as it can drip easily.
Especially on hot days, it's recommended to go with a cup for a double.

Furthermore, takeaway cups and gelato dacquoise are also available for sale.
The volume for takeaway is about 90 milliliters.
Additionally, the gelato dacquoise is made by sandwiching gelato between dacquoise cakes.
| Type | Price (tax included) |
|---|---|
| Takeaway (with lid) | 380 yen |
| Gelato Dacquoise | 380 yen |
| Hot Coffee Black (single) | 200 yen |
| Set of Hot Coffee and Gelato | Gelato price + 170 yen |
| Single Cone | 20 yen |
| Ice Pack | 20 yen |
| Insulated Bag | 150 yen |
Please use the ice pack and insulated bag when you purchase takeaway, if necessary.
A Wide Variety of Options! Oblate's Gelato

Oblate offers a very rich variety of gelato!
They always have more than 10 types available.
At the time of the interview, there were 13 types of gelato available.
Note that the lineup of gelato changes depending on the season.
There are regular products like Shiawase Milk, but there are also gelato that appear as seasonal limited editions.
Furthermore, if Mr. Nishino, the representative and gelato craftsman of the shop, researches and creates interesting products, they will be added to the lineup.
Irregular updates to the lineup are being conducted.
Don't you want to visit Oblate regularly to check if there are any new products?
All of Oblate's gelato is, of course, homemade at Oblate.
It is made at a separate gelato workshop.
Additionally, Oblate's gelato, except for some like "Italian Classico," does not use any chicken eggs.
People with allergies can enjoy it too.
▼ The lineup of gelato at the time of the interview is as follows.

- Shiawase Milk 【Popular】
- Evolved Strawberry Milk
- Italian Chocolate 【Popular】
- Hazelnut Chocolate
- Pistachio (100 yen extra) 【Popular】
- Biscotti
- Amarena Cherry
- Italian Classico
- Strawberry Sorbet from That Time
- Chicory Coffee
- Pear Sorbet
- Raspberry
- Gentle Anno Sweet Potato
Let's take a look at each one.
▼ Shiawase Milk

"Shiawase Milk" is Oblate's signature gelato and a popular product.
Kisuki Dairy uses two types of milk, resulting in a rich milk flavor and a pleasant sweetness that doesn't linger.
Kisuki Dairy's milk is low-temperature pasteurized milk.
It is pasteurized slowly over time, so the original flavor and nutrients of the milk remain.
Additionally, the taste is refreshing.
Incidentally, it seems that low-temperature pasteurized milk is common in Italy as well.
Shiawase Milk is a gelato that allows you to enjoy the richness and creaminess of milk.
▼ Evolved Strawberry Milk

"Evolved Strawberry Milk" is a gelato that features the flavors of strawberry and milk, as the name suggests.
It is an improved version of the strawberry milk that was previously offered, making it even more delicious.
Previously, strawberry sauce was mixed into the gelato, but it has been improved and changed to raspberry sauce.
You can taste the milk flavor and the refreshing sweetness of the strawberries.

Although it may have a sweet and sour impression due to the raspberry, when you actually try it, you'll find that the strawberry flavor is more pronounced than the previous strawberry milk!
▼ Italian Chocolate

"Italian Chocolate" is an authentic chocolate-flavored gelato blended with three types of cocoa.
Its deep brown appearance may give a bitter impression.
However, it is not very bitter, and you can enjoy a rich sweetness similar to that of raw chocolate.

This chocolate is made in the same way as in Italy!
▼ Hazelnut Chocolate

"Hazelnut Chocolate" is a standard gelato that is widely popular among people of all ages in Italy, the home of gelato.
As the name suggests, hazelnuts are blended into the chocolate.
Therefore, within the rich sweetness of the chocolate, the unique roasted flavor of hazelnuts spreads.

I highly recommend it for chocolate lovers!
▼ Pistachio

"Pistachio" is a rising star among Oblate's gelato offerings.
It uses plenty of pistachios from Italy, spreading a rich pistachio flavor in your mouth.
The pistachios used are from Sicily, a famous region for pistachios in Italy.
Some people enjoy a double scoop of pistachio and hazelnut to savor the flavors of both nuts.

Thanks to the reputation that "Oblate's pistachio gelato is delicious," it has gained popularity through word of mouth.
Note that the pistachio flavor is 100 yen extra.
▼ Biscotti

"Biscotti" is a biscuit-flavored gelato.
The biscuit has a caramel flavor.
You can enjoy a rich and deep sweetness, as if you are eating a biscuit.
This gelato is gaining attention with many repeat customers.

The slight hint of cinnamon is also a nice touch!
▼ Amarena Cherry

"Amarena Cherry" is made from syrup-preserved black cherries from Italy.
This is mixed into the gelato as a sauce, along with crushed pieces.
Additionally, cherry pieces are added on top.
The rich sweetness of the amarena cherry and the chewy texture of the fruit provide a nice accent.

Gelato made with amarena cherries is popular in Italy!
▼ Italian Classico

“Italian Classico” is a type of gelato called “Buontalenti” that has been loved in Italy for a long time.
Buontalenti is a milk-flavored gelato that won an award at a gelato competition in Florence in 1970.
Since then, it has become a traditional “taste of the town” that can only be enjoyed in Florence.
It is a smooth gelato made with milk, fresh cream, egg yolks, and condensed milk.
You can enjoy a rich sweetness that is different from Shiawase Milk.
Some customers even try a double scoop of Italian Classico and Shiawase Milk to compare the two.
Italian Classico is particularly popular among middle-aged men.

In Japan, it might be comparable to the nostalgic “Ice Cream” from the past.
▼ That Strawberry Sorbet from Back Then

“That Strawberry Sorbet from Back Then” has a slightly different flavor compared to other gelatos.
Sorbet refers to sorbet in French.
Therefore, you can enjoy the sweetness and acidity of strawberries in a direct and rich way.
It has a unique texture that is both sticky and smooth, which is a characteristic that cannot be found in other gelatos.
This can only be enjoyed in the sorbet series.
Additionally, since sorbet does not use any milk, those with milk allergies can also enjoy it.

It has a flavor that reminds you of the sweet and sour taste of first love, which is why it was named “That Strawberry Sorbet from Back Then.”
▼ Chicory Coffee

“Chicory Coffee” has coffee in its name, but does not use coffee.
It is made from a type of leafy vegetable called chicory, and you can enjoy a bitter flavor that is very similar to coffee.
At the moment you take a bite, you feel a caramel-like taste, followed by a coffee-like bitterness.
It seems to have a deeper flavor than regular coffee.
It gives the impression of a slightly stronger coffee milk.
It is a flavor that can be enjoyed even by those who are not fond of coffee.

Chicory Coffee is a healthy gelato that is caffeine-free and rich in dietary fiber.
▼ Pear Sorbet

“Pear Sorbet” is a seasonal gelato available in autumn.
As the name suggests, it is a pear sorbet.
You can enjoy a rich and juicy sweetness that feels just like eating a pear.
Additionally, the smooth texture unique to sorbet is also appealing.
Many customers are looking forward to the arrival of Pear Sorbet.

In the autumn of 2019 (Reiwa 1), we used the “Housui” variety, but in the autumn of 2020, we tried using the “Nijyu-seiki Pear”!
We would like to try various varieties.
▼ Raspberry

Raspberry refers to raspberry.
In other words, it is a raspberry sorbet.
You might have an image of it being quite sour.
However, when you actually try it, the sourness is surprisingly not strong.
The refreshing sweetness is accented by a moderate acidity.

The raspberry gelato has a very refreshing and fruity taste that leaves a pleasant aftertaste.
▼ Gentle Anno Sweet Potato

“Gentle Anno Sweet Potato” is a seasonal gelato.
During the interview, it was October, so it was truly a taste of the season.
The rich and flavorful sweetness unique to Anno sweet potatoes is likely to attract Japanese people.
It tastes just like a sweet potato dessert.
This gelato brings out the sweetness of Anno sweet potatoes.

Even after the season for Anno sweet potatoes has passed, it is so popular that people ask, “Is there no Anno sweet potato gelato?”
Popular Signature Product “Shiawase Milk” in a Single Cone

I enjoyed the popular signature menu item “Shiawase Milk” in a cone.
This gelato is made with milk from Kiki Dairy, which Nishino, who originally ran a dairy, is proud of.

Moreover, it uses two types of milk from Holstein and Brown Swiss cows.
Gelato is made from each type of milk, and the two gelatos are blended, which takes a lot of time and effort to create.
Holstein has a light flavor, while Brown Swiss has a rich flavor, so combining the two creates a deep taste.

Shiawase Milk has a rich milk flavor that spreads abundantly in your mouth.

You can enjoy a rich sweetness, but it does not linger after eating.
Rapidly Rising Popularity of “Pistachio” in a Single Cup

Another popular product, just as popular as Shiawase Milk, is “Pistachio.”
It is a green gelato, so at first glance, you might imagine matcha or melon flavor.
When you try it, you feel a rich yet refreshing sweetness, followed by a pleasantly nutty pistachio flavor spreading in your mouth.

Additionally, the crunchy texture of the pistachio pieces sprinkled on the surface of the gelato adds an accent.
The pistachio flavor that spreads when you bite into it is also delightful.

The sweetness is truly exquisite, satisfying even for someone like me who loves sweets, yet it is not overly sweet and does not linger.

And you can enjoy the pistachio flavor just right.
I felt an urge to have another one.
“Italian Chocolate” and “Italian Classico” in a Double Cone

I had the "Italian Chocolate," which is said to be popular after the "Happy Milk" and pistachio, and the "Italian Classico," which the owner, Nishino, highly recommends, in a double cone.
The Italian Chocolate is characterized by its rich chocolate flavor and intense sweetness.

Additionally, the sticky texture left a lasting impression.
I also enjoyed the sweet aroma of chocolate.

The "Italian Classico" is the only gelato among those sampled during the interview that uses chicken eggs.

The flavor created by milk, cream, egg yolk, and condensed milk has a slightly different taste from the Happy Milk.

While the Happy Milk has a strong milk flavor, the Italian Classico is impressive with its richness from the eggs.

While both have a sweetness that doesn't linger, the Italian Classico felt lighter.
The combination of the rich sweetness of the Italian Chocolate and the mellow sweetness of the Italian Classico seems to be quite compatible.
"Biscotti" and "Amarena Cherry" in a Double Cup

I had the recommended "Biscotti" and "Amarena Cherry" in a double cup.
The "Biscotti" is a gelato mixed with caramel-flavored biscuits.

Additionally, there are pieces of caramel-flavored biscuits on top of the gelato.
The rich and intense sweetness of caramel is likely to become addictive.

And the subtle hint of cinnamon, which does not interfere with the caramel flavor, served as an accent.

The other "Amarena Cherry" served in a double portion.

A sauce made from cherry syrup is mixed into the gelato.
Additionally, pieces of fruit are also included in the gelato, and chunks of fruit are placed on top of the gelato.

The rich sweetness with a mature flavor, along with the chewy texture of the fruit and the intense flavor of the cherries, creates a taste that is likely to become addictive.

I also felt a hint of rum raisin.
"Evolved Strawberry Milk" and "Gentle Anno Sweet Potato" in a Double Cup

I ordered the "Evolved Strawberry Milk," which is an improved version of the previous strawberry milk, and the seasonal "Gentle Anno Sweet Potato" in a double cup.
▼The combination of pale pink and pale yellow gives a pop impression.

▼The evolved strawberry milk has a color reminiscent of strawberries and milk.
When eaten, the rich flavor of milk and the refreshing sweetness of strawberries spread in the mouth.

I heard that raspberry sauce is mixed in, but the tartness of the raspberry is subtle.

Rather, the flavors of strawberries and milk stood out.
▼The "Gentle Anno Sweet Potato," available only from autumn to winter.

The sweet flavor of sweet potatoes, reminiscent of baked sweet potatoes, matched well with the flavor of milk.
I think sweet potato lovers will find it irresistible, with flavors reminiscent of baked sweet potatoes and sweet potato pie.

The gentle Anno sweet potato is a gelato that evokes the feeling of autumn.
Next, we interviewed Nishino Daisuke, a representative and gelato craftsman of Oblate.
