Let me introduce "TANE," which is filled with the owner's thoughts everywhere.
A spectacular wall of masking tape! A selection of 1,000 types
The entire wall is covered with mt masking tape.
This shelf is, of course, handmade by the owner, and the selection includes about 1,000 types.
“Everything except the window frames is handmade”
The owner laughs, but the overwhelming impact makes it feel like the masking tape is coming at you.
There are various types of masking tape, including ones that can be written on and erased like a blackboard, and others that can be used as a ruler.
It seems that slightly retro and simple designs sell well in the store.
With seasonal designs, character designs, various widths, and sizes, time flies by as you gaze at them.
The prices range from a few hundred yen to several thousand yen, which is also a nice touch.

Additionally, TANE offers a workshop menu called "Handmade experience with masking tape." The experience lasts 20 minutes and is available for anyone, including children.

The owner, Tanegashima, who remodeled the store himself and brought in the Mini Cooper, is always thinking about how to entertain customers.
I interviewed him to find out where his source of energy comes from.

Can you tell us about the background of how you created this store?
Tanegashima (no honorific)
About five years ago (around 2013), many stores opened on Honmachi Street. This changed the flow of people. So, I thought I would try to bring people back here (to my store).
At the same time, places like "café BISCUIT" opened, and it felt like everyone was moving together.
Why did you decide to handle masking tape?
Tanegashima
When you think of Kurashiki, it’s either masking tape or jeans.
At the time I was creating the store, the recognition that mt masking tape originated in Kurashiki was still low.
I wanted to raise awareness that mt masking tape is from Kurashiki.
I didn’t know anything about tape (laughs)
Thanks to that, sales of tape have been increasing since around 2015.
Inside the store, there are large shelves and classic cars, creating a unique store layout that you won't find anywhere else.

Originally, this was my birthplace, and it used to be a sake brewery's warehouse.
I renovated it over three months, and everything except the window frames is handmade by me. I made that shelf too.
The shelves are handmade! That's amazing. Why did you place that car here?
Tanegashima
Isn't it interesting to have a car in the middle of the store? Children and foreigners enjoy it too. I wanted to create an impact.
That is a British-made Mini Cooper that I bought from a corner of a car shop. It's rare because it's a left-hand drive (in Britain, cars are right-hand drive), so foreigners often take pictures of it.
That classic car certainly stands out. I also recognized it as a car shop.

Right? Anyway, I want to enjoy doing things differently from others. I want my customers to enjoy it too. It's the same with the cars, music boxes, and workshops.
In any case, I want everyone who comes here to enjoy being here, and I build each day towards that goal.
Now, please tell us about your future plans.
Tanegashima
For now, there are two years until the Tokyo Olympics (as of 2018). By then, I want people in Kurashiki and overseas to know that mt originated in Kurashiki.
And I want to enjoy what I do. The products are the same no matter where you buy them. I want to focus on how to make the purchasing experience enjoyable.
It's about wanting people to enjoy being in this store.

There are definitely aspects that aren't about money.
The smiles of customers are the source of my desire to entertain, and seeing those smiles makes me happy, so there are parts of my work that revolve around that.
