Interview with Nozomi Kozai from KURABUN Co., Ltd.

The "Usagiya Pan Marche," which includes not only bread but also wagashi.
We spoke with Nozomi Kozai (no honorifics), who planned the event, about the intentions behind it.

Please tell us the intention behind this year's "Usagiya Pan Marche ~ Sometimes Anko ~" project.

Kozai

This year, as indicated by the subtitle "Sometimes Anko" on the flyer, we will be selling "anko products," which is different from previous years.

The idea to focus on "anko" came from a stationery event called "Bun-gu ♡ Can" held at Aeon Mall Okayama in November 2025, where we sold ohagi (sweet rice balls) from "Amato no Mise Yamato."

Before the store opened, nearly 100 customers lined up, and the 500 pieces we prepared sold out in less than an hour. Seeing this scene made me realize that "anko" is something very familiar and sought after by customers, so I decided to add anko elements to the bread this time.

Additionally, we asked "Art Brut" to create bread using the anko from "Amato no Mise Yamato."

I hope that connections between local businesses will be born through "Usagiya," and this time we are planning it with a slightly different theme than last year.

Amato no Mise Yamato - A long-established shop specializing in ohagi. Handmade ohagi with exquisite sweetness of chunky anko and rich flavor of kinako.

What are the highlights or points you particularly want people to pay attention to this time?

Kozai

There are three main points.

The first is the collaboration goods with the famous confectionery "Nishikido" from Hiroshima.
"Nishikido" has a store (Fukuyama Minami Zao Store) near Usagiya Fukuyama Minami Store, which is always bustling, and I had always thought, "I hope we can collaborate someday." When I had the opportunity to ask, they readily agreed, and it became a dream-like project.

When we announced the collaboration goods on social media, there was a great response, and this time we will offer them in the form of "advance sales at the Kurashiki Store."

The second is a limited menu using strawberries.
Every year, from the end of February, we hold a strawberry fair at the attached café "Georges Lapin."

This year, as a collaboration menu that maximizes the appeal of strawberries from "Kamome Farm," we will also provide a limited menu exclusive to "Georges Lapin" in collaboration with "Art Brut."

The third is the enhancement of live sales and sales system.
This year, "Okayama Kobo Liaison" will be present to provide curry bread freshly fried on the spot. Bread lovers will surely be satisfied.

Last year, about 200 people lined up before the opening, and the bread sold out in just 30 minutes, causing inconvenience.

Learning from that experience, this time we will conduct sales in a "two-tiered" approach at 10 AM and 1 PM. We are well prepared to ensure that customers coming in the afternoon can also make purchases.

Finally, please give a message to the readers who will attend.

Kozai

This year, the lineup of bakeries participating has changed, and a new enjoyment of "anko" has been added. There will be many "Usagiya limited breads" that can only be eaten at this event, so I hope many customers will come to enjoy them.

And since we are a stationery store, I would be delighted if many people could pick up and enjoy the special collaboration stationery with "Nishikido," which is a highlight.

We sincerely look forward to your visit.

Conclusion

Pan Marche 2024: Sold-out scene
Pan Marche 2024: Sold-out scene

Okayama Prefecture is said to be a region with high bread consumption, as seen in Soja City, known as the city of bread, but I was surprised to hear that over 200 people lined up before the store opened and that it sold out in about 30 minutes.

This year, they are preparing a sufficient number of items and have a system in place for sales in the afternoon, but it is undoubtedly better to go early to buy.

"We might need to impose a limit on the number of items, but it would be disappointing for those who come to buy,"

Kozai's expression conveyed the troubles that come with a highly popular event.

On March 7 and 8, if you love bread and wagashi, please visit "Usagiya Kurashiki Store."
I hope this event will allow as many people as possible to enjoy bread and wagashi.
