Ohara Museum of Art, a cultural facility that Kurashiki is proud of.
Directly in front of it, there is a building characterized by its green tiled roof.
The name of the building is "Yurin-so Villa".
It is usually not open to the public, but special openings are held every spring and autumn.
The title of the special opening for Yurin-so Villa in autumn 2023 is "The Shape of Family".
I went to visit.
Photography is generally prohibited inside Yurin-so Villa. This time, we have received special permission to take photos.
What is "Yurin-so Villa"
Yurin-so Villa is the former villa of the Ohara family, completed in 1928 (Showa 3).
The main residence is now the "Ohara House Katalyzer", which was historically significant even at that time, but it seems that it was difficult to have a living space exclusively for the family as it allowed entry from anywhere.
Therefore, Ohara Magosaburo was considerate of his wife, Suenko, and requested the construction of a "Western-style house" to serve as a living space exclusively for the family.
As a result, from the initially domestic Western-style house, functions as a "guesthouse," which did not exist in Kurashiki at that time, were established, transforming it into a "genuine residence" that combines a spacious Western-style entertainment room with a large-scale Japanese architectural style.
This is the current Yurin-so Villa.
Special Opening of Yurin-so Villa in Autumn 2023 "The Shape of Family"
The special opening of Yurin-so Villa in autumn 2023 is titled "The Shape of Family," and works featuring family as a theme from the collection of Ohara Museum of Art are being exhibited.
Yurin-so Villa was originally built for the family.

The curator of the Ohara Museum of Art, Hasegawa Yuri, who was in charge of the project, spoke as follows.
The building known as Yurin-so was originally a villa built by Ohara Magosaburo, the head of the Ohara family.
It was constructed because Magosaburo's wife, Sueko, was in poor health, and they wanted a place where the family could relax together, in addition to their main residence.
I hope that visitors will enjoy the "family works" expressed by various artists in this space built with such "thoughts for family."
I would like you to enjoy the works as they are at first, and also think about what kind of feelings the artists had when expressing them, and what family means to you personally.
