People Software Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "People Software") is an independent IT company without a parent company established in 1982.
The company was founded by five system engineers who happened to gather in Kurashiki City for a secondment. They felt dissatisfied with the environment at the time, wanting to deliver better products with their own skills, and established the company with the desire to "directly deliver the value of engineers to the world."
The biggest feature of People Software is that it is a company that prioritizes engineers. They have been focusing on creating a work environment that is easy for engineers to work in, such as adopting a flextime system and allowing casual clothing early on.
Additionally, the open atmosphere where young employees can take the initiative to challenge themselves, as well as the warm interactions through club activities and committee activities, are also major attractions of People Software.

Ota Ayano working at People Software
The person who agreed to this interview is Ota Ayano, who works at People Software. Born in 1998, she is from Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture.
She belongs to the Business Promotion Department of the Innovation Promotion Division, which was newly established in 2024, and is active as a system engineer.
About Ota's job
Currently, Ota is working on the development of an “Automated Transport Control System” used both domestically and internationally. As a member of a large project, she is stationed at the company that developed this system and usually works at the client’s company rather than her own.
Ota provided a clear explanation of the automated transport control system by giving an example, which was helpful for someone like me who is not familiar with system development.
For instance, when manufacturing golf clubs in a factory, the first step is to move the raw material, a block of iron, to the processing area, where it undergoes processes such as "cutting" and "washing." After quality checks, the finished products are transported to designated locations.
This entire flow until completion is called "transport," and the automated transport control system automates this transport by freely moving robots.
Responding to requests from those on-site who actually use the system is also part of Ota's job. She supports the manufacturing site by adding new features and improving the system.
When I asked, "Did you feel anxious about your first external assignment?" she replied, "At first, I was worried, but I overcame it by consulting with my peers who were working on the same project and receiving support from colleagues at the client’s company who were close in age."
Let me introduce a bit about the Business Promotion Department of the Innovation Promotion Division that Ota belongs to.
The Innovation Promotion Division is a department that challenges to realize the future that customers aim for by organizing issues and discovering needs together with customers using IT as a means. It does not stop at mere technical development but also challenges social contribution areas such as collaboration with academia and regional issues. Among them, the Business Promotion Department is responsible for consulting, development, and maintenance.
Ota's department's role is to utilize high technical skills as a system engineer to tackle customer issues.
Encounter with People Software
During her university days, Ota was enrolled in the Faculty of Literature, which was unrelated to IT.
Reflecting on her background of aiming to become a system engineer from a liberal arts background, she said, "There was an information processing class at the commercial high school I attended, and I found the programming I experienced there surprisingly interesting."
Ota thought, "If I'm going to get a job, I want to work in a field I have at least a little experience with, rather than in an industry or job I know nothing about." She searched for IT companies in Okayama Prefecture and encountered People Software.
The deciding factor for her joining was the stability of the business from contracts with major companies and the challenge of developing their own systems.
At that time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all selections were conducted online, but after receiving a job offer, she was invited by the recruitment officer to visit the office. There, she interacted with senior employees who were close in age and got the impression that "there are many active women at People Software."
What are the attractions of People Software as a "workplace" from Ota's perspective?
Ota believes that the greatest charm of People Software is the "abundance of growth opportunities".
Not only are there ample training programs to hone technical skills, but there are also many learning opportunities that go beyond the scope of work.
For example, there is an internal initiative called "Lightning Talk," where employees give short speeches in front of a large audience. The purpose of this is to cultivate communication skills, which are more important than technical skills, through the experience of speaking in front of many people.
Ota mentioned that she was not good at speaking in front of large groups in the past, but she feels that she has developed the "ability to convey" which is essential in her work.
Additionally, she says that the company positively encourages employees' requests such as "I want to challenge this" or "I want to take this training." It is because of the culture that respects employee autonomy that there are many opportunities to challenge oneself at People Software.

Having joined People Software, Ota is now in her sixth year as of 2026. I interviewed her about her journey of growth as a system engineer and her current sense of fulfillment.
