We interviewed Mari Miyake, the manager of Kitchen Ashiato.
Can you tell us about the background of opening Kitchen Ashiato?

I originally had a desire to run a shop, and I thought if I was going to do it, I might as well make it a place where dogs are welcome.
The reason is that I have a dog myself, and whenever I wanted to go out to eat, I had to leave my dog at home or rush back, which was frustrating.
If the shop is dog-friendly, not only can customers enjoy it, but I can also bring my dog, so I opened this shop.
What is the origin of the shop's name?
Miyake
One meaning of "Ashiato" (足跡) in "Kitchen Ashiato" is that it evokes the image of dogs.
I think it's easy to understand because there is an illustration of a dog's paw print on the shop's sign.
And actually, there is another meaning: I wanted to convey the hope that customers can leave behind enjoyable memories here, which is why I named it Ashiato.
Do you have a concept for the shop?

I hope this shop becomes a place for dog lovers.
Most of the customers seem to be residents of Kurashiki City, but actually, we also have many customers from far away.
When pet-related events are held in the nearby area or when people go out with their dogs on holidays, I often see customers dining here before heading back.
I haven't heard of many places that allow pets during izakaya hours at night.
Therefore, I hope people can come to this shop as a place where families can dine together with their dogs or friends can gather.
Is there anything you prioritize in running the shop?

I want to create a friendly atmosphere like a downtown shop.
I also talk to first-time customers. This shop has many regulars, and everyone is friendly, so it's common for regulars to have lively conversations.
There was even a case where a person staying at a nearby hotel on a business trip came to eat, and then returned a few months later on another trip.
Moreover, I was really happy when that person brought colleagues with them.
The dishes served here may not be "Instagrammable," but they are all homemade comfort food that warms the heart.
At night, we operate as an izakaya, but even if you don't drink alcohol, I would be happy if you just come to eat. We also have soft drinks available, so it's fine if you can't drink alcohol.
By the way, I, the owner, also do not drink alcohol, so please feel free to come for a meal without any pressure.
Do you have any future goals or plans?

I want to turn the second floor of the shop into an inn.
My goal is to open it next year (2026), and I am currently doing cleaning and repairs.
There are many customers who come from far away, such as Kansai and Shikoku, but I often hear that there aren't many places around here where dogs can stay, so most of them return home the same day.
I want to create a place on the second floor of the shop where those people can stay with their dogs and enjoy a leisurely outing with their beloved pets.

Of course, those with dogs are welcome, but even if you don't have one, as long as you are okay with dogs, everyone is welcome.
It might be a bit hard to enter since the inside of the shop is not visible from the outside, but it's fine to just order a drink, and you can drop by while taking a walk.
