Let me introduce the popular udon restaurant, Teuchi Udon Oonishi.

Recommended and popular menu items at Teuchi Udon Oonishi

Oonishi has a very large menu.

Therefore, I asked the owner, Oonishi Hiroshi, to introduce the recommended menu items and popular dishes among customers.

Information as of June 2023. Prices include tax.

"Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon" is the owner's top recommendation

Oonishi: Setouchi Lemon Oroshi Udon (Hot) Tempura Set

The dish that the owner, Oonishi, recommends the most is the Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon.
It is available in both hot and cold versions, each priced at 850 yen.

Additionally, there is a "Tempura Set" (1,200 yen) available with the Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon.

During the interview, I ordered the hot udon with the tempura set.

There are both cold and hot options, but I recommend the hot one.
The flavor of the dashi spreads better with the hot version, so it's my recommendation!

Oonishi: Setouchi Lemon Oroshi Udon (Hot)
Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon (Hot)

The large slices of lemon are quite striking, with three pieces placed on top.

Oonishi: Setouchi Lemon Oroshi Udon (Hot)
The lemons are domestically produced

The vibrant yellow is beautiful.

We use lemons from Setoda in Hiroshima Prefecture!

Oonishi: Setouchi Lemon Oroshi Udon (Hot)
The broth has a light, transparent color with a refreshing taste of dashi
Oonishi: Setouchi Lemon Oroshi Udon (Hot)
Squeeze the lemon and add the lemon juice to the udon broth

When squeezing the lemon, place it on a spoon and use chopsticks to squeeze it; that's the trick.

I was worried about whether the udon broth and lemon would go well together, but when the refreshing lemon juice is added to the light udon broth, it surprisingly enhances the refreshing taste!

Oonishi: Setouchi Lemon Oroshi Udon (Hot)
The noodles are thick, very flexible, and have just the right amount of chewiness, making them delicious

The udon broth, now enhanced with lemon juice, pairs well with the noodles, allowing for a smooth and hearty eating experience.

Oonishi: Setouchi Lemon Oroshi Udon (Hot)
Plenty of grated daikon radish.

The refreshing broth with lemon juice and the crispness of the grated daikon radish are a perfect match.

Furthermore, the unique texture of the grated daikon radish adds a nice touch.

Oonishi: Tempura
The tempura in the tempura set includes shrimp and pumpkin.

The batter has a crispy texture.

The shrimp is quite thick and has a nice bounce.
On the other hand, the pumpkin is fluffy.

For Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon, it is recommended not to dip the tempura in the broth.
If you dip it in the broth, the flavor of the tempura will diminish the wonderful lemon flavor.

Innovative yet refreshing and easy to eat, I also recommend Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon!

In fact, Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon was born from the "udon suki" that was once offered as a limited menu for night banquets.

The combination of bonito and kelp broth with lemon is excellent, and it seems that the desire to have that udon suki flavor in one bowl led to the creation of "Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon."

Bukkake Udon is a specialty originating from Kurashiki

A popular dish at Oonishi is the various types of Bukkake Udon.

The Kurashiki Set includes the usual "Bukkake Udon" and costs 1,100 yen.

Bonito flakes, shredded nori, kamaboko, and chopped green onions are also included.

▼Of course, the noodles are the same as those in Setouchi Oroshi Lemon Udon.

Oonishi: Oroshi Bukkake Udon (Cold)

Since I ordered it cold, the firmness is stronger than when hot.

Bukkake Udon can be served with the broth poured on from the start or with the option to pour it yourself.

▼Pour the broth generously over the ingredients.

Oonishi: Oroshi Bukkake Udon (Cold)

The broth for our Bukkake is characterized by the fact that it is sweetened only with mirin.

Once you pour the broth, be sure to mix the noodles, ingredients, and broth well before eating!

The slightly sweet broth is very delicious when mixed with the noodles and ingredients.

Oonishi: Oroshi Bukkake Udon (Cold)

As you continue to eat Bukkake Udon, you can enjoy its deep flavor more and more.

Oonishi's Bukkake Udon has a gentle sweetness and a very refreshing aftertaste.

I thought it has a deliciousness that could become addictive.

Mackerel Sushi is a Hidden Gem

The "mackerel sushi" that comes with the "Kurashiki Set."

This is also exquisite!

▼In the Kurashiki Set, two pieces of mackerel sushi are included.

Oonishi: Mackerel Sushi

▼The refreshing and moderately sweet and sour flavor pairs well with the udon.

Oonishi: Mackerel Sushi

It's so delicious that you want more!

Additionally, there is also a "Mackerel Sushi Set" (1,450 yen) that comes with either zaru udon or kombu udon!
Also, I recommend "Shime Saba" (three pieces for 400 yen).

Please be sure to try the mackerel sushi as well.

Other Recommended Dishes

"Suzushiro Udon" is a refreshing udon recommended for summer

Oonishi: Suzushiro Udon (Dipping Noodles)

"Suzushiro Udon" (750 yen) is a cold udon topped with grated daikon radish, eaten by dipping it in sauce.

"Suzushiro" refers to daikon in the seven herbs of spring.

Eating it with grated daikon radish not only refreshes you but also allows you to enjoy the refreshing taste of the grated daikon.

It is truly a perfect udon for hot summer days.

Collaboration and Double Portions are a "Menu That Seems Obvious but Isn't"

Oonishi Menu

The "Collaboration - Extra Double" has been offered since 2021, and it became a regular menu item after starting on a whim and receiving positive feedback.

The menu consists of the following four types.

Menu NamePrice (including tax)

Fox & Tempura Udon1,100 yen
Double Shrimp Tempura Udon1,200 yen

During the interview, I ordered the "Meat & Tempura Udon," and the udon and tempura were delicious, eaten with broth that had the flavor of the meat.

The portion is also large, and one bowl is enough to fill you up.
