About the FLAT Store
What is the origin of the store name FLAT?
Takada (honorific omitted)
There are three reasons.
The first is that the Kojima Main Store, which is the first store, is a single-story building, and in English, a single-story house is called a flat.
The second is a pun on the desire for customers to stop by casually.
The third relates to the quality of tatami edging. Narrow woven fabrics tend to have a bumpy surface, and high-quality woven fabrics are referred to as flat.
Taking these into account, the name "FLAT" was chosen.
At the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area store, we also hope that customers will stop by casually.
What is the reason for establishing the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area store?
Takada
Originally, this building housed a French import goods specialty store.
In France, people who live a Japanized lifestyle are called "tatamiser."
Even now, if you search for "tatami" on Instagram, you will find many photos of people practicing judo in France, indicating a strong connection between the word tatami and France.
At that time, Takada Orimono's products were also placed in that French import goods store.
Later, I was offered the opportunity to open a store here, and thus FLAT was established.
About the Products
Next, please tell us about the products. What is the palm-sized pouch like?
Takada
It is a pouch with a gusset that fits in the palm of your hand.
It is sewn together with two types of tatami edging, and there are versions with and without lining.
If you hold it, you will find that it is lightweight and durable.
It can be easily carried around in daily life without being limited to specific uses.
How did the tatami edging shark come about?
Takada
The tatami edging shark is a product created by a local artist.
Originally, the back was all denim.
There are many jeans manufacturers along the coast of Kojima.
It started as a pun from "Jeans Bay," where the products made from the materials in that area were called "Jeans Bay Shark → Jinbei Shark."
Later, it was decided to "pack the textile products of Kojima tightly," and the tatami edging shark was born.
Kojima is a city known for its production of school uniforms. The artist's works also include "Gakkou Whale," made from school uniform fabric.
Can you tell us about the development origin of the gift envelope?
Takada
Initially, it was not an idea from Takada Orimono.
I saw a small quantity being made by a tatami shop and thought, "This is good," and consulted with them to commercialize it.
The patterns of tatami edging have various meanings, so you can choose which pattern to use while thinking about the recipient.
For example, a daruma pattern might be appreciated for a passing celebration, while a lucky cat might be suitable for someone who has opened a store.
I find it interesting that the gift envelope can also change its meaning based on the pattern, just like tatami edging.
The "edge" of tatami edging is the same as the "edge" of connections. The width is just right, and the tatami edging part can be used as a bookmark by the recipient.

What do you value at FLAT?

We value conveying the thoughts of the makers properly.
Since the store is directly operated by the manufacturer, it ensures that the materials do not just walk away on their own, and knowledgeable people can convey the information.
Does FLAT have any goals?
Takada
I hope that tatami edging will continue to be a natural part of people's lives.
To achieve that, I want to convey the various types of tatami edging so that everyone can be aware of them and be of help to everyone.
We aim to raise awareness and value of tatami edging.
If that can return to tatami, it would be even more delightful.
Challenge of Handmade Tatami Edging
The author, who usually stays away from handmade crafts, tried making a ribbon with tatami edging.
I made a "Connection Ribbon," which the recipe said was "easy for beginners!"
Following the recipe, I cut the tatami edging to a length of 25 centimeters and prepared a hair tie and double-sided tape.
The "Connection Ribbon" only requires a little sewing.
In general, you fold it, sew the ends a little, cut it, turn it inside out, and tie it to complete.
The recipe includes recommended thread and needle sizes for sewing machines, as well as recommended sewing methods and illustrations for hand sewing.
I challenged myself with hand sewing.
I imagined that it would require some strength to push the needle through, but it sewed smoothly.
When you press it down with your hand, it takes shape, making the folding process easier, which is another nice point.
Even after a long time away from sewing, I easily completed the ribbon!
It was fun, so I thought I would like to try making something else with a different recipe next time.
