"I want to do something for the community, but is there anything I can do?"
Have you ever thought about such things? A little greeting or watching over your neighbors, participating in community events, in fact, our everyday actions can be an important force supporting the community.
Now that it is said that connections with the community have weakened, we spoke with the planners about the "Supportive Community Building Forum," which serves as an opportunity to reconsider the importance of mutual support in our daily lives.
What is the "2026 Supportive Community Building Forum"?
The Supportive Community Building Forum will be held on June 28, 2026 (Sunday) at the Plaza Hall within the Kurashiki Health and Welfare Plaza, and is a continuing event since 2016.
This forum will be held in two parts, focusing on the theme of "mutual support that 'my usual self' can provide," featuring a keynote speech by Mr. Ikeda Masahiro and presentations by practical organizations.
Participation is free, with a capacity of 280 people on a first-come, first-served basis ( pre-registration required).
In the first part, there will be a keynote speech by Mr. Ikeda Masahiro, the chairman of the National Community Life Support Center. The themes will include "mutual support in daily life" and "community building that everyone can participate in," where participants will learn about the importance of community involvement and mutual support.
In the second part, there will be practical presentations by the following organizations engaged in mutual support activities within Kurashiki City.
- Kaji Fusa Sumio, Head of the Mizushima/Tsurajima Nishiura District Environmental Branch
He is developing activities to watch over local elderly residents, starting with greening activities. - Kajita Yuko, Tokumaru Association, Kojima/Akasaki District
She is working to create a space for interaction among residents by opening community salons in conjunction with mobile sales vehicle rounds.

Interview with a Life Support Coordinator
We spoke with Yamamoto Chiho, a life support coordinator at the Kurashiki City Social Welfare Council, about the thoughts and highlights behind this year's forum.
In light of the growing attention to community mutual support, why did you decide to address this theme now?
Yamamoto (no honorifics)
As life support coordinators, we have opportunities to hear from various people while working in the community. Among them, we often hear daily life concerns, especially from elderly individuals, such as "It's becoming difficult to go shopping." While it is certainly necessary to improve the systems in place, I am always thinking about whether we can create a structure where residents can help each other within the community.
When people hear "community mutual support," they often have the image that it is something special done by particularly enthusiastic individuals involved in community activities. However, in reality, simply greeting familiar faces while out for a walk or checking in on someone you haven't seen lately is also a significant form of mutual support.
These natural interactions that have been occurring in our daily lives, and the extensions of those interactions, are the starting point of community mutual support and are important "treasures" that support the community.
By making people feel, "I might be able to do that" or "I may already be doing it without realizing," I hope to lower the barriers to engaging in mutual support and community involvement, which is why I chose this theme.
What are the highlights of the forum?

In the first part, we will have a lecture by Mr. Ikeda Masahiro, the chairman of the National Community Life Support Center. He finds the "nameless mutual support" present in the community and views it as "community treasures," advancing community building.
He often says, "People won't gather unless it's enjoyable." This reflects the idea that connections and mutual support arise from things we like and enjoy, rather than from a sense of obligation.
In the second part, we will introduce examples from individuals active in Kurashiki City. These initiatives, which began with greening activities or mobile sales, are not special but rather arise from the extension of daily life. While the activities themselves are informative, I hope people will also pay attention to the underlying feeling of "caring for someone" that drives these activities. That casual "caring for each other" is the first step towards mutual support.
I believe there will be many hints that make people think, "I might be able to do that."

I would be happy if participants' perspectives on their "usual surroundings" changed a little.
I hope that residents will realize that even their everyday actions are "also a form of mutual support," and that they will start greeting each other with a smile or consider participating in community events more casually.
I also want to encourage businesses and professionals in the medical and welfare fields to participate. I hope this will serve as an opportunity to think together about future community building while leveraging their strengths and the natural connections within the community.

I would like to invite those who think, "This may not be related to me," to come.
This forum is not a place to go learn something, but rather a place for "checking answers" to realize that what you are already doing is part of mutual support activities.

Everyday greetings, watching over others, and small acts of kindness are the actions of each of us that can support the community.
