Shimotsui Shipping Agent Museum
The Shimotsui Shipping Agent Museum is a facility that has turned a former shipping agent's building into a museum and tourist facility.
The residence of the Nishiogino family, who became wealthy through finance and warehousing during the Edo period, was purchased by the Nakanishi family of the shipping agent Takamatsu-ya in the Meiji period and used as a merchant house and herring paste warehouse. After the shipping agency went out of business, it became a workspace for the textile industry.
The Shimotsui Shipping Agent Museum is a facility that has been restored as closely as possible to its Meiji period state for utilization.
Inside the facility, there is an exhibition hall for historical materials of Shimotsui, Japan Heritage information, a sales area for local specialties, and dining options.
Former Nakaniwa Residence
The Former Nakaniwa Residence is the residence of a wealthy merchant who once operated a shipping agency under the name Takamatsu-ya in Shimotsui. It is a rare surviving structure of an old merchant house in Shimotsui.
While entry into the interior is not permitted, just viewing the exterior reveals the financial power of the Nakanishi family, who thrived as a shipping agency.
Shimotsui-juku Kazemachi Shiomachi
The Shimotsui-juku Kazemachi Shiomachi is a guest house available for whole building rental.
It was renovated from an old folk house located to the east of the Former Nakaniwa Residence. It opened in July 2024.
Setouchi Seavillage House
The Setouchi Seavillage House opened in 2023 after renovating an old folk house that was formerly a tofu shop.
This facility allows for "trial migration" for those considering moving to Shimotsui, where the number of migrants is increasing.
Danjo Denim
The Danjo Denim is a jeans shop and workshop that opened in 2021.
It has been renovated as a store and workshop in a folk house over 100 years old.
Shimotsui Yokocho
The Shimotsui Yokocho is a facility that opened in 2024.
Originally a shipping agency, it was a long-established seafood wholesaler, Yoshimata Shoten, during the Showa era, but has been renewed as Shimotsui Yokocho.
Inside the building, there are multiple tenant booths for challenge stores. Fresh fish shops and cafes are operating there. Events and morning markets are also held.
Iso no Yokan Honpo Tanaka Hanmasado
The Iso no Yokan Honpo Tanaka Hanmasado is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop that was founded in 1910 in Shimotsui.
The beautiful emerald green Iso no Yokan, made with domestic aonori (green laver), has been sold since the Taisho era and is a specialty of Shimotsui, making it a perfect souvenir.
They also sell monaka (wafer cakes) and other items. Additionally, the shop displays old photographs of Shimotsui and antiques collected as a hobby, which are worth seeing.
Gion Shrine
The Gion Shrine is a historic shrine located on a cape in the central part of Shimotsui. It has long been worshipped as a deity of safe navigation.
From the shrine grounds, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea, making it an excellent scenic spot.
Additionally, the offerings left at Gion Shrine and the Shimotsui Gion Documents provide insight into the prosperity of the Kitamae ships, making them a component cultural property of the Japan Heritage "A different world entwined with the dreams of men who overcame the stormy seas - Port Towns and Shipowners' Villages of Kitamae."
