Bichu Kurashiki Studies is an association that studies the history and culture of the Bichu and Kurashiki regions and contributes to cultural enhancement.
The first session, held on October 20, 2005, was titled "Field Training Session: The History of Kanryuji Temple: Instructor, Kanryuji Temple Chief Priest Murata Ryuzen," and by March 14, 2024, it has been held 177 times on a wide range of topics.
The monthly lectures are widely open to the public, and anyone can participate for free.
We will introduce "Bichu Kurashiki Studies," where you can learn about the history and culture of a wide area centered around Kurashiki.
What is Bichu Kurashiki Studies
"Bichu Kurashiki Studies" started in October 2005.
We will introduce the purpose of the association's establishment and the content of the lectures.
“Bichu Kurashiki Studies” was established by stakeholders (townspeople) around the Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District of Kurashiki, aiming to learn about the region's history and culture, and the name "Bichu Kurashiki Studies" was chosen. Members were gathered through word of mouth, and the first session was held in October 2005.

Monthly lectures combined with field trips have been held every second Thursday at 2 PM (with August off). In collaboration with Kurashiki Community Center, the lectures are held in their large hall. Not only members but also the general public can participate for free without prior registration.
Members can participate in an annual bus field training session within the prefecture and visits to places not usually seen nearby, which are exclusive benefits for members.
The lecture topics are not only focused on Kurashiki but also cover a wide range of the Bizen and Bichu regions, and various fields are selected to spark interest, with speakers invited who can speak on those topics.
In May 2016, the 150th session was held. The lectures consistently attract an average of about 70 attendees, including both members and non-members.
We hope to increase the number of members who agree with the purpose of "Bichu Kurashiki Studies," and with the power of the townspeople, we wish to enhance the association and learn in a fun way.
What is an Important Traditional Buildings Preservation District?
The system for preserving traditional buildings was established with the revision of the Cultural Properties Protection Law (1975), aiming to preserve historical settlements and townscapes such as castle towns and post towns. Each municipality applies to the national government for designation, and those deemed to have high value are selected as Important Traditional Buildings Preservation Districts.
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area has already been designated as "Kurashiki City Kurashiki Riverbank."

The number of lectures held is surprising, and I am also drawn to the wide range of topics and the distinguished speakers.
Field training sessions have also been conducted, starting from Kanryuji Temple and Achi Shrine, to Honjima Island in the Seto Inland Sea.
By visiting not only Kurashiki but also a wide area, there may be new discoveries about the local history and culture.

Interview with the "Bitchu Kurashiki Studies" Planning Committee
An interview was conducted with the members of the "Bitchu Kurashiki Studies" Planning Committee.
The interview content is based on the initial coverage conducted in August 2023.
The "Bitchu Kurashiki Studies" is operated by 11 members, with the head being the chief priest of Kanryuji Temple, Takuzan Murata.

What kind of activities does "Bitchu Kurashiki Studies" engage in?
Yoshimura (Honorifics omitted)
Centered around Kanryuji Temple (Chief Priest Murata), several founding members including Yamane initiated the Bitchu Kurashiki Studies.
It started in the precincts of Kanryuji Temple and later borrowed the large hall of Kurashiki Community Center, co-hosting events with the community center.
Bitchu Kurashiki Studies is supported by its members and their membership fees, and it is operated by volunteer members.
In fact, general participants who do not need to pay membership fees can also attend the lectures for free, so many general participants join.
Members have the opportunity to participate in an annual field study tour and social gathering by partially covering the costs. This has become an important venue for interaction among members and for everyone to promote Bitchu Kurashiki Studies together.
There are individual members and corporate supporting members, with individual membership costing 4,000 yen per year and corporate supporting membership costing 10,000 yen per year. Membership applications can be made at the lecture reception.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that 70% of members are over 70 years old, it would be great if the resumption leads to an increase in young individual members.

Since October 2005, we have held 170 sessions, and the upcoming sessions have also been uploaded.
Primarily, I have been involved in the publication of books issued by "Bitchu Kurashiki Studies", which led to my activity as a planning committee member.
It’s impressive that you have held 170 sessions so far. How are the lectures and speakers selected? Is it possible to view past lectures?
Yoshimura
We hold a planning committee meeting about once a month, where each committee member recommends the next speaker, and decisions are made.
Regarding past lectures, we have compiled nearly 150 sessions into DVDs, which are stored at the Kurashiki Community Center Music Library.
Since some speakers have passed away, I believe these are valuable materials, but due to insufficient organization, it is currently difficult to utilize them.
In the future, we would like to consider better organization and utilization methods.
What is the current composition of the planning committee members who are operating?

The chairman is Chief Priest Murata of Kanryuji Temple.
I serve as the secretary, and there are 8 committee members including myself.
Additionally, we have asked a former city official to serve as vice-chairman.

Popular topics for lectures include the Sengoku period and the Meiji Restoration, similar to NHK's historical dramas.
Besides being the treasurer of "Bitchu Kurashiki Studies," what other activities is Ozaki involved in?
Kamada
Ozaki is a renowned flower arrangement instructor and regularly creates large flower arrangements for each lecture at "Bitchu Kurashiki Studies."
Ozaki (no honorifics)
There are nearly 300 flower arrangement schools across the country, and my school is Kuwahara Senkei-ryu.
The headmaster is in Kyoto, and it is a school with many members in Kurashiki City.
Additionally, the impetus for 'Bitchu Kurashiki Studies' came from my studies about Mishima Chushu (from Nakajima, Kurashiki City) and my love for history.
I am also a member of the Nakajima District Local Studies Group, where we interpret hanging scrolls written by Mishima Chushu and publish books about him.
In fact, fifth graders at Kurashiki City Nakajima Elementary School learn about Mishima Chushu every year, making him a familiar figure.
Yamane
Mishima Chushu is the founder of Nishogakusha University (currently in Chiyoda, Tokyo) and is also famous for being the educational advisor to Emperor Taisho.
Is there a reason behind the name 'Bitchu Kurashiki Studies'?
Yamane
The name 'Bitchu Kurashiki Studies' was coined by Mr. Morita of Morita Sake Brewery.
In fact, many of Mr. Morita and the planning committee members of 'Bitchu Kurashiki Studies' are parishioners of Kanryuji Temple, which is a characteristic of the group that gathers around Kanryuji Temple.
Kamada
While it is not the origin of the group's name and not something publicly stated, I believe it is connected to the 'Kurashiki Sunday Lectures' that Ohara Magosaburo held as a place for citizens to study.
Unlike courses organized by the city hall or those held as hobbies by individuals, it is an activity like an NPO that is held in collaboration between the government and the private sector, which is why it has been able to continue for such a long time.
The lecture series will resume in September 2023. All the lectures sound interesting.
Yoshimura
The first lecture is from the representative of Kurashiki, Kurashiki Central Hospital, so I think it is a fitting lecture for a fresh start.
When you think of Kurashiki, you think of the Ohara family.
The Ohara family founded Kurashiki Central Hospital.
Since the central hospital has reached its 100th anniversary, I hope it will attract attention.
Ozaki
Kurashiki Central Hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 2, 2023.
As part of the commemorative projects, they are also working on initiatives such as the installation of a water stop wall and the origami crane wall, which are very exciting.
Yamane
One of the highlights is the G7 Kurashiki Labor and Employment Ministers' Meeting held recently in Kurashiki City, which is also related to Ohara Magosaburo's efforts to improve labor hygiene and environment.
After three years, we are resuming. Were there any difficulties?
Kamada
It is not something we are doing forcibly or as a business, so rather than difficulties, it feels natural to resume.
It was more like, when should we resume?
Of course, there was no intention to stop, and we are doing it in a natural way.
When you think about it, it is a mysterious group.
Yoshimura
That's right.
There were no difficulties leading up to the resumption, and after the transition of COVID-19 to a category 5 infectious disease, it felt natural to resume whenever we could.
Originally, we wanted to start in April 2023, but due to preparations, we were able to announce the resumption in September.
I hope many people will participate in the lecture series and that as many people as possible will join as members.
Conclusion
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 'Bitchu Kurashiki Studies', which I have been looking forward to resuming, will continue into the 2024 fiscal year.
One regret is that the meetings are held on Thursdays, but I will participate as much as possible and want to learn broadly about the history and culture of the Bitchu and Kurashiki regions, making it an opportunity for cultural advancement.
